Hi, Where did your William marry Sarrah? I have found some information on a William who married a Sarah in Roane county, Tennessee. I think but can't prove that he was the father of my ggrandfather, John Stone(?) Dwyer in middle Tennessee in the early 1800's to 1874. If any of this is familar please email me. Sincerely, Pat Gardner

Sorry, I do not think we are working on the same line. I do not know where they were married, but William was born in Nova Scotia, Canada and Sarrah was born in Newfoundland, Canada. So it is highly unlikely they moved that far to marry as I have their children being born in Nova Scotia. Good luck on further searches.

Pat,

It is of great interest to me that your great grandfather is John Stone (?) Dwyer in middle Tennessee in the early 1800's to 1874.

My grandmother is Mattie DeWire. Mattie's Father is Patrick DeWire born in Ireland about 1830. I have recently learned he may have changed the spelling of his surname from Dwyer to DeWire. I am at brick wall on trying to find information on Patrick. I do not know where he came from in Ireland or when and where he entered the US. I also do not know the name of his parents. The first record I have of him is in Hickman County Tennessee on their 1860 census with his wife Ruth. His name was misspelled as Dorya. Since they did not have any children at this time, I believe they were probably married in 1859 or early 1860. Our early marriage records were destroyed in a fire during the civil war, so I do not have a record of the actual date of their marriage. Do you think your John Stone (?) Dwyer in middle Tennessee could be related to my Patrick DeWire/Dwyer?

Thank you,

Sandra

Hi. . John D. Dwyer had a son Joseph Benjamin Dwyer born in 1838. His wife was Matilda Wilson Jones. She died, probably in childbirth and he remarried to Elizabeth Webb. I do not have dates after this. He married or fathered my grandmother and her sister, Mariah Abernathy Dwyer and Sophria (sp) Blanche Dwyer in 1877 and 1874. (Mariah in1877). A lady on the net told me she is kin to me through John's marriage to Elizabeth Webb. She told me that there was a family story that a Catholic priest named William Dwyer married his wife in Ireland and had to leave and come to America. She said there was some mention of him in Roane Co, TN. I found records of land in Bedford Co. TN being sold in the early1800's to settle the estate of Daniel Dwyer. There were a lot of children inheriting. I will look them up for you. This is really all I know before my grandmother Mariah was born. I am interested in the priest. Your Patrick could have been a son of the priest. The book in which I found the land sale was one by the Marshes, husband and wife, titled something like Wills and Deeds for Bedford County TN. Where you live do you have a good library? Or a Family History Center by the Morman Church. The FHC can find books and let you check them out. You can sign up for the Bedford County Boards at Rootsweb. I'll let you know what I find. I'm glad to meet you, we may be "cousin"s. If you are not from the south, we tend to claim all kin as cousins. Looking at the census date he could be a brother to John. How old is he in the census? Bye for now, pat

Pat, Good to hear from you. The Hickman County 1860 census has him listed as Patrick Dorya (mispelled) and shows him to be 30 years of age and born in Ireland. His wife is Ruth age 19 born in TN. I do not know the story of the Catholic Priest, William Dwyer, but would like to know it. Our county library is not that good but it might possibly have the book you are referring to. The library in the next county is better and might have this book if our county doesn't. There is not a Family History Center near me. I will check the Bedford County Board ar Rootsweb. Yes, I am a southern girl. I am glad to meet you too. It is good to meet a new cousin. Thanks, Sandra.

Hi Jane:
I realize that I have no way of contacting you. I can't find your email address so I am hoping that you get this message. I have that William Dwyer married Mary Mattatall in England at a church which falls under the govenance of the UK government. While in England this Christmas I attempted to get the records but I could not as the church is not on public land. Can we chat some day. My email address is robertandburdena@yahoo.com. Your cousin, Dena

Hi Shea,
although I am a Dwyer researching my own Irish roots, this is not a post about Dwyers specifically.

I am trying to understand your difficulty with the access to the Church?
Churches are under the governance of their denomination. For example, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Church of England, Quaker etc.
Not the government.
Where was the church and what was it's name?

If it was on private land, it sounds as if the church itself might have been deconsecrated and used as a home or a business?

Also, it is very unlikely you would have found any records there, as the historical records are centralised either in the national Archives in London (for English records) and might be found also in the family history society for that area.

These Family History Societies are online and will often have members whom can help you in your search.

http://www.ffhs.org.uk

If you let me know the church and parish/county where they married (and when)..I will try my own records.

Best regards
