I am looking for information about James Evans b. 1793 in Kentucky who married Sarah "Sally" Garrett Aug 18 1818 in Warrick Co. Indiana. I am trying to find out the names of all their children. James Evans shows up first in 1820 Warrick County census. He marries in 1818 in Warrick Co. and he is in the Ohio twp. in the 1830 and 1840 Warrick Co. census. I didn't find him in the 1850 and he then shows up again in the 1860 Warrick Co. , Boon twp. census with two of his children: Vasteli (F) b. 1833 in IN and Isaac E. b. 1841 in IN. I am trying to see if they had a daughter Elizabeth Evans b. 1825 in IN who married Milton Harger Nov. 29, 1839 in Warrick Co. Indiana. If you have any information at all on this family please contact me at: yorobin@altavista.net. Thanks so much for your time!!

Hi Lois,
The information that I have on James Evans siblings doesn't list a Phoebie Evans b. 1791. Andrew Evans and Elizabeth Fain are suppose to be James Evans parents. James was born in Kentucky and he married his wife Sally Garrett Aug 18 1818 in Warrick County Indiana. Do you know where your Phoebie was born or where she was married? Do you know where her husband Jesse was born? Was she and her husband living in Warrick County before 1875? I didn't find Jesse and Phoebie in the 1850 or 1860 Warrick County Indiana census. There was a couple of other Evans families living in Warrick County also. I don't know how or if they are related to each other yet. Sorry I have more questions than answers for you at this time. Let me know the other dates you might have for them and maybe I can help help you figure out if she was related to the other Evans families of Warrick Co. IN.

My gggg grandmother was Lydia Wells, born in 1816 and died 1844 in Pike Co. Indiana. I suspect that she was born in Nelson Co. Ky. She was married to David Jackson Davis whose family was also from Nelson Co. KY. Perhaps there is a connection here. I see that your Daniel Wells died in Warrick Co. perhaps he was her brother. I have noticed that there are several Wells in Pike and Warrick Co.'s during this time frame.

In response to your post of 2000 concerning Phebe Evans Wells and her husband Jesse Wells. It would appear that this line is the Jesse Wells who descended from William Wells and Rebecca Oliver of Fayette Co PA, Nelson Co, KY and Washington Co, IN. I note there is also a Thomas Wells in Warrick Co ... are Thomas and Daniel brothers?
I am researching the family of David Wells, believed to be a grandson of this Wells family. I note that the names in the families of Thomas and Daniel Wells are quite common in my line as well (Posey Co IN, KY, PA) and would like to share information. We are trying to eliminate or account for all the Wells in this part of Indiana so that we can better pursue the unidentified persons in our line.
Any help or information much appreciated.

Sorry, I don't have any info on the Evans. I was doing the same thing you were doing ... trying to trace a related Wells line (cousins) from Posey County. Thanks anyway and sorry I couldn't be of help.

Robin,
Your original message is several years old but I do hope that this reaches you. Your posted email address bounced back today as undeliverable. I recently had a break through on an Evans (and Thompson) line(s) I have been researching in Wapello County Iowa. I strongly feel that the Evans of my research in Iowa were children of James Evans of Warrick County Iowa. I may also have informartion or leads that may help you if my speculations are correct. Do you have the names of the children of James and Sarah Evans? Do you know when and where James and Sarah died?

Here is a gist of what I have: William Taylor Thompson married Mary (Polly Ann) Evans 29 Oct 1842, and Jacob Thompson married Rhoda Evans 16 Nov 1844, in Warrick County Indiana.

I speculate that Wm and Jacob were brothers and that Mary/Polly and Rhoda were sisters. These two families left Warrick County between 1845 and 1850 and were in Wapello County Iowa for the 1850 census. Jacob and Rhoda later went west and settled in Linn County Oregon.

From the 1850 census in Wapello County, Iowa and other records, I speculate the following Evans were likely siblings:

Polly Ann (Mary) Evans born ca 1821 Indiana (father given as born KY and mother NC)

Rhoda Evans born ca 1823 Indiana (father given as born KY and mother NC)

Henry H. Evans born ca 1825 Indiana

Sarah A. Evans born ca 1830 Indiana (father born KY mother NC)

Isaac Evans born ca 1841 Indiana

Caroline Evans born ca 1836 Indiana

From the census years James Evans was enumerated from 1820 to 1840, it would seem that James (if it was the same James each census year) might have had 11 children born between
years 1811 and 1840 (two sons and nine daughters). Also, perhaps another marriage before Sarah/Sally?

James and Sarah Evans had Isaac E. age 19 in their household in the 1860 census and that fits for the Isaac age 9 in the household of Henry Evans in 1850 Wapello Co Census. Further, the birthplaces given for the parents of Polly, Sarah, and Rhoda in the 1880 census, match the information for James and Sarah Evans in the 1860 census. I find this an encouraging clue.

There was a James Evans in early Wapello County and whom I loose track of before 1860 and whom I have not located in the 1850 census. That will be another clue I will revisit.

I hope this information helps you and I would appreciate hearing from you and any help or suggestions you might be able to provide. Thank you and best regards, Vicky
