Hello. I'm looking for information about the Ting family in the Fujian province (Chendai). The surname is actually abbreviated from an originally Muslim name. Would anyone have any information on this Muslim name?

I have been told that the name is derived from Aladdin with the last part (Din) becoming Ding in Chinese. When Western scholars tried to put Chinese into alphabetic form some of them (e.g. Wade/Giles)used the letter "T" for the sound "dee" so that the surname Ding became written as Ting. The Ding surname (pinyin spelling) is common in China. As for the story of its origin, it sounds somewhat fanciful although it could be that the Chinese of old used the name Aladdin as a group classification to denote the Muslims they encountered, having been told of the stories of Aladdin. This is somewhat comparable in the English-speaking world to the creation of the name Smith which is derived from people in the iron-working profession.

Some variations of Ting and other surnames can be found at my website "Chinese in Guyana: Their Roots"

As a believing muslim I can tell you that Aladdin is a proper, in the medieval ages widely used Muslim name which an important meaning.
The proper name is ´Ala ad- Deen (or Din), which means "the one high in religion".
It is a name used in many muslim cultures and it surely was and is used in the muslim cultures in China (bethey Hui, Uyghur or whatever) as well. It does not only have a connection to the old story from "Arabia Nights".
I think that it might be very possible that the name Ting might also be derived from any other in medieavl times widespread name ending on "deen".
E.g. there is Salah ad- Deen (Prayer or salvation of religion) aka "Saladdin"!
