Surnames: DeTemple, Le Temple, Servene
Looking for where I can find if any church records or cival records of the area around Verviers Belgium prior to 1700. Looking for the possibility of information on the DeTemple or Le Temple family in this area about that time. Possible workers for a family named Hauzeur in iron industry. Thank you.

Are you looking for the 3 DeTemple brothers that migrated to Germany from Belgium?

Hi Buz,

Thank you for the response. Are you related to the DeTemples by blood, if so how?

I know very little of the DeTemples prior to the 3 brothers going to Germany in the 1700's As I understand, they left Belgium to work in Germany.

My grandfather was Peter DeTemple born in 1846 in Germany. I was born in 1946 here in Pennsylvania. I believe all the DeTemples are related, sometimes it confuses me how.

Almost every person that I have corresponded with in the past with a DeTemple line has a story of family royality. I do not believe it's true, I just don't understand how persons with no prior contact can tell the same story several generations later.

It is important to me to understand your connection to the DeTemples.

Please write soon.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your's!!

Hello Sandy
Thank you for the reply and a Happy Thanksgiving to your family.

First for the castle rumor.
I have read some of the story's online in the boards and personally believe none of them. My way of doing the family research is to believe that everyone was a "common folk-salt of the earth" and dont go any higher unless I have uncontestable proof otherwise--and I have yet to find it. I believe that the vast majority of my people were just "good people"--lucky enough to stay alive and have children who have children on down the line to me.
My belief on the 'castle' is that at some point people have seen the word KASTEL for the town where some of the DeTemple clan was from like: Franz DeT. and his wife Maria Ley then their son Matthias March 9, 1786-July 3, 1877 in Kastel etc.-Rudi Jung's book. Eventually people have taken KASTEL- to mean ''our castle". and the storys have grown up around this fact. "Aunt Lou heard it from her Uncle who remember when he was 6 or 7 hearing his grandparents take about the castle etc. etc. etc. and whomever Aunt Lou was talking to was the beginning genealogist and eventually it becomes a fact. Cherished family story"
For me I'm just proud of all the "little people" --it got us this far.

As for me I connect into the DeTemple's from my 2 X great grandmother ELISABETH DeTEMPLE who married VALENTIN SERVENE (becomes SAVANNAH in the US).
Leaving a few names and dates out--
From my 6 X great grandparents down:
JAKOB D. and his first wife MARGARETHA nn
They came to Scranton PA on June 3, 1851 from Zinsershutten-also on board the ship was her cousin Christian DeTemple and his wife Anna Maria (Uhl)
Then from Elisabeth and Valentin:
MARY (Voss)
STEVEN "Buz" KUZAN-myself. I am 47.

Since it is known Hauzeur brought people from Belgium to help in the iron works and Jean DeT. was a manager I am thinking that they worked for him in Belgium somewhere and near Liege is where Hauzeur was from. I can't make the connection that the three were brothers but because of their ages I do assume that they were either brothers or cousins but definitely related. I am hoping for brothers and hoping we can find a record with their names together as a family unit.

I recently for the first time had a chance to go to Scranton and see some of the graves of the Savannah's and took a photo of ELISABETH DeTEMPLE SAVANNAH'S grave where she is buried with her son and his wife in the German Catholic Cemetery #5-St. Mary's.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and If you do find proof of the 3 guys prior to landing in Zusch/Zinsershutten I hope you can remember me.

Thank you.

Buz Kuzan

Thank you so much for the response. I agree with you 110% about the good people before us.

It's hectic here , I have a few grandchildren spending a few days.

My geneology chart is put away because I have a room under construction and everything is upside down right now but I recognize the names in your line...I think they are the same as mine in the early 1800's. I'll check when I can find them.

Is it appropriate to ask for your email address?

Marcus DeTemple living in Germany says he THINKS our name originated when one of our ancestors, Waither, purchased a farm owned by the Knights Templar in Belgium approx 1200, thus DeTemple.

I think I would like to put the info together nicely for my children to have. It just needs to be located then compiled.

If you have the info, Peter DeTemple born 1846 his mother's first name was Margarette, do you know what her sir name was, Butterbauch or Rickenbach?

Thank you,
