Debra it has been some time since I've been in and checked this board and hope this will reach you. Edmond Baxter land is brother to my Thomas Ann Land. Three Land brothers married three Brinson sisters. Then the Land sister also married a Brinson. Have Land and Brinson genealogy back to immigrants.
Still trying to find parents of our Joseph Baxter and then Marie Grace Phillips mother of Ann (Annie) Elizabeth Baxter. Please get in touch with me by e-mail. I can send report from FTM by e-mail to you.

Gayle - I don't know if we've been in touch before, but I see that you are interested in the surname Cowell, I assume in the Currituck area. I have done some work on them and have some text notes I can send you. In my work on other Currituck surnames, such as Taylor and Nicholson, I have some deed references to Jeremiah land in the 1796-1832 period. E-mail me directly at and I'll at least send you my Cowell notes.

Gayle, hope you are still checking these. I am searching for information on Peter Baxter who may have been the son of Thomas and Marie Grace Phillips Baxter. This is my husband's line. Would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you very much.

Jo, I have nothing on a Peter Baxter in that line. I have that Joseph and Mary were Thomas Baxter's parents and Thomas and Marie (Phillips) Baxter were the parents of 6 children listed below. I am descended from William and Mahala. Would love any info you have on him----maybe there is a long lost son out there!
I also have quite a bit of Baxter info and perhaps a few is Peter connected to Currituck?

Baxter, Joseph, Sr
b. Jan 01 1748
d. Feb 02 1822
m. Ferebee, Mary
b. Oct 20 1750
Poplars, East Ridge, NC

Their son:

Baxter, Thomas
b. Mar 03 1777
Currituck County, NC
d. Aug 13 1821

2) Baxter, Mary Polly
m. Wilson, David

3)Baxter, Ann
m. Land, James

Thanks for the reply, Gayle. I don't really know he is connected to Currituck, other than that is what has been posted on Several have him dyig 1850 in Currituck. I know he was in Burke Co., NC in the 1830 census, but is absent in the 1840 (then McDowell Co.)although he and Elizabeth had children born in the 40s. She and the rest ofher children followed some of her sons children to Reynolds Co.,MO after the 1850 census. One of the older sons was William who was my husband's great grandfather. I have been chasing this family now for about 55 years, and not about to give up now. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Jo

Wow, 55 years of searching!

I checked the info--all I saw for Peter was from the Jackson Family Tree---is that the source you site?

If so, I think that the Currituck county connections may be in error-----the Jackson info it lists both Peter and Thomas born and died the same years (causing me to believe that somehow the 2 became "overlapped" in this research -- my Thomas E. died in 1856)

The documentation sited in the Jackson info on Ancestry for Peter's 1850 "Residence" source is the 1850 Federal Census for Tull's Creek in Currituck, which doesn't list a Peter Baxter at all---only Thomas E.(who is 45 years old) and Thomas F. (who is 28 years old) and their families. Thomas E. is married to "Love" in this census--- one of the wives listed for Peter in the Jackson info is "Lovey Bray". Thomas was also married to a "Lovey Bray" according to my sources.

Also, Peter is listed in the Jackson info as having other 2 wives named "Elizabeth" born 15 years or so apart, but having the same children born the same years to both of them.

This is all very confusing, of course, but my hunch says that Peter was not in Currituck in 1850. I think the Jackson info on has mixed up Peter and Thomas.

Please let me know if you have additional info or questions.
