I am a Mangin from NYC and now live near Madrid, NY where a Joseph Francois Mangin is supposed to have settled. I am interested in learning more about the French side because I beleive there is sort of a triangle of mangins moving between France, Haiti (Carribbean), Africa, and NY. I would like to figure out the details. And most important want more information before I dig in the archives.

Very interested in anything about Joseph Francois Mangin (1764-post1818?). For those who are not aware, he does have entries in the DAB and American National Biography but his whereabouts circa 1804-1810 and his ultimate fate are unclear. The post to which I'm replying and the 8 June 2000 posting by Jen Mangin Ogtong indicate some connection with Madrid, NY. Does anyone have anything on this?

JFM arrived in NYC, with a wife and at least one son, in 1794 from Santo Domingo (Haiti), where he had spent most of a decade as a French military engineer. He flourished as an engineer and architect in NYC for a decade (he designed the current City Hall) but lost his status as one of several "city surveyors" (not a public office per se but essentially a licensed status permiting him to engage in surveying work for public or private clients) circa 1804 and seems to have left the city until circa 1810, when he regained "city surveyor" status and designed two important churches, including the first St. Patrick's Cathedral on Mott St. (still there, though largely rebuilt after a mid-1800s fire). In 1818, he petitioned the city government for financial assistance and, apparently destitute at age 54, disappears from any records.

I am wondering if JFM was in Madrid during the 1804-1810 period and/or retired or died there?
