OK, we got a tree set up at We downloaded its GEDCOM and uploaded it to rootsweb worldconnect. We like worldconnect because it's free, but pedigree only goes to four generations. So, now we are going to buy Family Tree Maker and The Next Generation, register a domain, and put a tree with boxes on our own website. Does that sound right?

You can put a family tree on Ancestry for free. You just can't access the paid databases. There are free databases available that you can access, though those may change from time to time. I can't help you with Rootsweb.

It sounds like you should slow down. Desk-top software and domains are not free to obtain or maintain.

You can work on Ancestry's free member tree program, it's fine for beginners. Learn how to build a tree, learn the basics of research, how to evaluate and cite evidence. The tools to display your work come after you have something solid to display.

Newbies should keep there data private on the internet until they fully understand the functions of the sites.

If you put the tree on Ancestry, and are prepared to do a lot of research in a very short time, you also can typically get a short trial membership (you just have to be sure to follow the cancelation instructions to the letter, if you don't want to continue). Or, you could do a month-to-month and cancel when you have what you want - the tree will continue to be available to you and you can continue to work on it although, as noted above, you won't be able to research the paid databases if you are not currently a paying member.

I agree that you should make any tree private until you are sure what you are doing, so you don't accidentally put information out in the public arena that you later might prefer to have kept private.
