In an article in "The Houston Lawyer"(monthly publication of the Houston Bar Assn)entitled "Lawyers at the Alamo", Daniel William Cloud is profiled. Some of the information is as follows: Daniel Cloud was born in Logan County,Kentucky in 1814 and was a lawyer by trade. He traveled to Texas from Kentucky with several others, including Peter James Bailey III (1812-1836). Cloud was a prolific and talented writer and many of his letters still exist today. (the article quotes a letter he wrote to his brother describing his travels in Texas and desire to assist in the battle for Texas independence).Cloud and Bailey both enlisted in the volunteer Texas forces on January 14, 1836 in Nacogdoches Texas. From there they traveled together to San Antonio and the Alamo. The footnotes of the article reference information available at the Daughters of the Republic of Texas library at the Alamo.

My grandmother Lady Lillian Cloud (Rau) was the
neice of Daniel Cloud who died at the Alamo.
I don't know her father's name. He died in Denver
about 1940's. He was married to Fannie Manning
who had a sister Ada who was married to a Cloud
Does anyone have any other info? My grandmother had
5 siblings. 2 died in childhood. Brother Burt
lived in New Mexico, sister Lela lived in Los Angeles,
sister Allyne lived in Philladelphia and Denver
Any info would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hi, Daniel who died at the Alamo is thought to be the nephew of my ancestor John CLOUD. John CLOUD was living in Louisiana when Daniel CLOUD and Davy CROCKETT stopped to visit John on their way to meet Sam HOUSTON. John CLOUD and Davy CROCKETT were supposedly lifelong best friends. John lived in KY prior to LA, before that in TN, GA, NC. Davy CROCKETT was from VA, John's father may have been in VA prior to John's birth, family originally from PA/DE area, descended from William CLOUD + Susan JAMES (1600s). Lineage goes back to Calne, Wiltshire, ENG, ~1502, William CLOUD. I don't know specifics of your immediate family, info from my branch differs from family to family. Not sure how Daniel was figured to be the nephew of John, if not a nephew then a close relative. John's brothers were named William (b 1750) and Noah (b 1752).

Daniel believed to be a son of Noah CLOUD, younger brother of John

From an article by Barry Zander, per Bruce Evans "Cloud had more than just friends fighting for Texas' independence, according to local historian Harley B. Bozeman." He also had a young nephew who was a lawyer in Natchitoches who volunteered. Bozeman had previously written (1965) about this visit and quoted from a recently published book, HEROES OF TEXAS: "At Natchitoches, Louisiana, Daniel Cloud (believed to be a son of John's younger brother, Noah Cloud), reacting to Houston's appeal to 'come with a good rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition-- and soon,' gave up his promising law practice and joined Davy Crockett's Mounted Volunteer Sharpshooters."
Zander noted: Daniel Cloud "is believed to have died with Crockett, Milam, Jim Bowie, William B. Travis, and James Bonham at the Alamo on March 6, 1836." I'll see if I can find any of the names of Noah's children, the siblings of Daniel. It might take me awile to go through all my CLOUD data.

Daniel CLOUD noted as son of Daniel SR

I came across the following info today while I was visiting links posted by Tom CLOUD. Go to the sites he lists on this message board to see this webpage. I'm quoting it here because there is a lot of info on that webpage, in response to your question re Daniel CLOUD's parentage. This contradicts the info from the book I cited previously. This info does coincide with my family tradition that Daniel CLOUD came from KY, and that he arrived at the Alamo sometime after the New Years holiday, which he spent at the home of his relative John CLOUD in Louisiana, on the way to where he met Sam HOUSTON at the Prothro Mansion in Louisiana. Supposedly, he was travelling with Davy CROCKETT and Ben MILAM. Ben MILAM was also from KY. (John CLOUD lived in KY prior to migrating to LA, and had family there.) CROCKETT MILAM might be the "two others" mentioned below:

"CLOUD, DANIEL WILLIAM (1814-1836). Daniel William Cloud, Alamo defender, son of Daniel and Nancy (Owens) Cloud, was born in Logan County, Kentucky, on February 20, 1814. He was a lawyer and, on his way to Texas, traveled through Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana with Peter J. Bailey,qv also a lawyer from Logan County. Both men enlisted in the Volunteer Auxiliary Corps of Texas on January 14, 1836, at Nacogdoches, as did B. A. M. Thomas, William Fauntleroy, and Joseph G. Washington, qqv all of whom were also from Logan County, Kentucky. With these four men, Micajah Autry,qv and two others, Cloud traveled to San Antonio de Béxar and the Alamo. They arrived after February 11 and became members of the Tennessee Mounted Volunteers, commanded by William B. Harrison.qv Cloud died in the battle of the Alamoqv on March 6, 1836."
