I'm looking for info on the ancestry of Martha and Sarah Dowden (below). Martha was the first wife of Simon Kenton, the Kentucky explorer. A bit of her family history is mentioned in the book "The Frontiersman" by Alan Eckert. Also, I know that Simon Kenton, Jr. married a Sarah--I have reason to believe that her surname was Dowden. They are buried in White Co.,IN. Can anyone verify a Sarah Dowden as the wife of Simon Kenton, Jr., or as a relative of Martha Dowden? I'd be happy to share the info I have on the descendants of this family.
Descendants of Martha Dowden

1 Martha Dowden 1755 - 1796

Thomas and Jane Smith Cleland had ten children: eight girls and two boys. Two of their granddaughters (Martha Dowden and Elizabeth Jarboe) married famed Indian fighter and pioneer Simon Kenton and together are the mothers of ten of his eleven children. (His eleventh child was illegitimate.) In addition, their daughter, Mary, married Simon’s eldest brother, William; and their daughter, Susannah, married his best friend, William McGinnis. Simon Kenton led many people, including several of Thomas and Jane’s children, west to Kentucky and Ohio.

Martha Dowden's parents were Thomas and Sally Cleland Dowden. Sarah (or Sally as she was known) was one of Thomas and Jane's daughters.

I have a bio of Thomas and Jane that I would be glad to forward. Contact me via my e-mail:

I know of only seven children of Sarah/Sally Cleland and Thomas Dowden:

Mary Jane Dowden Owens and her husband had at least one child, Dr. Asa Owens, who settled in Illinois.

William Ashford Dowden (1779-1851) was married to Nancy Ann (maiden name not yet known). They had four sons and three daughters. He and Nancy are buried in Dowden Cemetery, Shelby County, Ohio.

Martha Dowden Kenton, Simon Kenton's first wife, was severely burned in a fire in Mason County, Kentucky, while she was lying in bed awaiting the birth of a child. After being rescued from the fire, she gave birth to a stillborn infant and died soon after (on December 13, 1796).

Thomas and Sally's other children were John, Archibald, Thomas, Jr., and Jane.

I would be glad to share information. Please contact me at I have more info, especially on Sarah's ancestry.

It's Jane Jones again. I think I have the information about Simon Kenton, Jr. that you want. He married Sarah/Sally Dowden on Dec 1, 1818, in Logan Co, OH. They had at least six children: Martha Ann (1821-1873), Orville (1824-1851), James Newton (1830-1906), Amanda (1934- ), Elizabeth (1836-1855), and Jennifer/Jenny (1837- ).

I have been researching the Workman family of Logan County, Ohio for many years. While in Logan County several years ago I found a marriage record for a James Workman to a Hannah Dowden, 29 March 1814 In Champaign County, OH.

The Historical Review of Logan County Ohio, states that James M. Workman married Hannah McCulloch and that Simon Kenton Jr. was supposedly married to a Workman girl, but I have found no evidence of this in the Logan Co. marriage records. There is, however, a marriage record for a Simon Kenton to a Sally Dowden, 1 Dec 1818. So I guessed that Sally may well have been a daughter of Hannah by a previous marriage.

Today I found a Bible record for the John & Jean (Biggs) Dowden family. In this Bible it states that John Posey Dowden b. 18 Jul 1773 in Maryland married Hannah McCullock (sec). So I do believe that Sarah/Sally Dowden is the daughter of Thomas P and Hannah (McCulloch) Dowden. Thomas died 10 Oct 1810.

There is a deed (Logan Co, OH Deed Book B, p. 25) dated 27 Sep 1824 where Simon and Sarah (Sally is a nickname for Sarah) sold their property in Logan County.
