The different versions of the name are as follows: Caunte(original)/Cornett/Cornutt/ Curnutt/Cornutte/Curnutte

We all have the same common ancestors with different spellings of the name. Originally there were five brothers that moved from France to Canada and then in the 1700's in to Virginia. They were in Grayson Co., Bedford Co., and Henrico Co. When there decendants left Virginia, they went to Tennesse, Kentucky, and Oregon that I know of. They didn't start to leave Virginia untill the early 1800's. I am off of James Curnutt's line. (We spell it Cornutt). My line goes James/David/Alfred/Stephen/Lena who was my grandmother. I also have the names of all David's children and Alfred's children if any one needs them.

WandaLena I would like to share some information
with you about the Cornetts. I have been
trying to sort this mess out for some time
now. Recently I purchased a book titled,
"Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County Virgina",
it has a history of the Cornetts printed
inside. The book was published in 1914.
If you could email me at
I would like to compare notes with you. I would
like to know how far back and how far to the
present you are with the Cornett line. If interested
please email me. Thanks Creed Cornett
(from Eastern Kentucky and now living in
Cincinnati, Ohio.

Hi WandLena,I believe that there is more than one James cornutt. I have James born abt 1760, then his son Archelus, then George Bourne Cornett. I believe the other James that you mention could be the father or uncle of the James that I listed. There is a copy of the will of James and he lists his son Archelus as an heir at this link I am hoping that I can find out who the father of James 1760 is. some say it is your James and others say it is a John. But I need proof. The will by the way does have transscription errors in it. Twice it calls Archelous Armholes. Also if you look at the census records for grayson county VA you will find James head of household with son Archelus. You cna find these at Good luck in your seach. Let me know if you find out anything new. I'm trying to access Henrico Co. for info but the web site will not open.

Long story - no Cornetts in my family, but I corresponded with a researcher who wrote to me with a long list of Cornetts. Archelous' father was James (b. circa 1750), and James' father was James (b. circa 1727 in Henrico Co., VA, d. 1796 and married to Sarah) in Montgomery Co., VA. John C. was Archelous' son, and he, Archelous, and James #2 are buried in a Cornett cemetery near Elk Creek, VA. I don't know if the author of this letter is on-line yet or not, but he can trace his lineage directly back to James #1. If you want more info, email your mailing address directly to me, and I will forward to this Cornett. I am just now mailing him a follow-up letter after a couple of years.

Nina, I have the information you are looking for. The children of James Canute/Cornutt/Cornett and Sarah Basham are:
1) Reuben b. 1752 Henrico Co., Va. d. August 1824 Elk
Creek, Grayson Co., Va. buried Cornett Cemetery, Elk
Creek, Grayson Co., Va.
2) Rebecca b. 1753 Henrico Co., Va d. Aft. 1850 Marion Co.,
3) William b. 1754 Henrico Co., Va d. 09/09/1803
Montogomery Co., Va.
4) David b. 1753 Henrico Co., Va. d. 1847 Grayson Co., Va
m. 1755 Sarah Platt
5) Agatha b. Abt. 1764 Henrico Co., Va
6) John Tolliver b. Abt. 1771 Henrico Co., Va. d. in
7) James b. 1788

I think you have cousins mixed in with this family. I have lines going down from David as follows: David b. 1753 > David b. 1788 > Alfred Wesley b. August 27, 1812 > Stephen b. November 3, 1833 > Lena Bell b. September 20, 1892 > Carol Ernest Reynolds > ME

I have a family bible from Alfred Wesley and have done extensive research on these lines. I have information on 74 James Canut/Cornutt/Cornett. The reason I give all three last names is because the family was originally Canute and then changed to Cornett and part of the family also changed to Cornutt during the Civil war. My line is now Cornutt. If you check under all three spelling you will find more information. If I can be of any further assistance, please e-mail me
