My brother John, came from a line of African-American Lewises who lived in Gates/Reynoldson Township, NC. His great-grandfather was Alex (spelling?) who appeared in the 1870 Census. My brother's uncles included Alexander Lewis, T. Roosevelt Lewis, Charles Lewis. He also had an aunt Lucie Lewis and an aunt Odell Lewis.

My brother is also related to Lessie Ora Lewis, Virginia Lewis who lived in Montclair, NJ, Effie Ione Lewis Moore who lived in Montclair, NJ, Addie Louise Lewis, Bessie Thomas Lewis and Albert Francis Lewis.

We'd appreciate any leads on living relatives and on breaking through the 1860 brick wall for Alex Lewis.

Well, sorry to say our Effie probably isn't a match. The full name we have for her is Effie Ione Lewis, born in 1907 to William Lonnie Lewis and Bertha (Dildy) Lewis. She had lots of sisters but no brother named Charles. Don't know what you've tried but perhaps the Census can help you. Don't give up! Best wishes.
