Looking for a family of STYERS which included Andrew Jackson STYERS born
1826 in or near Philadelphia. He was also known as "AJ" or "Jack" Andrew
Jackson STYERS migrated to St Louis, St. Charles, MO and Calhoun County, IL
(across the Mississippi River) and purchased several pieces of property
before he died about 1867 leaving a widow, Margaret Carpentier STYERS, and
several children. We have found 5 of the 9 they brought into the world:
Andy jr., William David STYERS, George Washington STYERS, Margaret J.

Who were his parents? siblings? what happened to other children and their descendants? Any help would be delightful!

Can anyone tell me the origination of the name of "Styers" and what it means? What country do the styers originate from? I have heard German, but have not seen the name in a phone book while in Germany. I have heard from Austria and did not find the name there. Any thoughts?

My Mother was a styers. She says that anyone with that spelling are in the family somewhere because only one family originally came over with that name. It is very definitely German. GINA

I've been away for quite a long time and apologize for not replying to your reply to my previous posts. I don't know if your Paul and My Andrew Jackson are related, but I certainly hope we can help one another find new clues. I've been banging my head against the proverbial "brick wall" for a decade or more. You may send email to me at

Styer in German refers to a stable keeper. The family is said to be of wealth. I would think they had large farms or plantations and kept animals such as sheep, cattle, etc. The family settled in Austria from Germany following the Prussian war.
