Have several Shands in my family tree who were born and lived in Old Machar Parish.

Alexander Shand b c1790 Old Machar
Married Elizabeth Simpson 02.06.1821

Had the following:

Elizabeth Shand b 1822
Isobel Shand b 1823
Alexander Shand b 1824
John Shand b 1840

The family then moved into the city to St Nicholas and I have a LOT of info and names on them.

Possible that Alexander born c1790 had brothers- William, Arthur and James, but haven't managed to prove a link yet.

Let me know if you want more info/dates and if there's a connection?

Dear Julie,

Elizabeth Shand (d 6/6/1877 @ 21 Berry Lane Aberdeen ABD) was my gg gran. Based on censuses, I would put her birth earlier: abt 1816 @ New Aberdour. Here are some FreeCEN transcriptions:

My g gran, Elizabeth Cowie (d/o Thomas Cowie + Elizabeth Shand) was probably only 17 in 1851, but this still makes an 1821 dob for Elizabeth Shand rather improbable.

Although not related to this strand (to the best of my knowledge), I wonder if the Elizabeth SHAND chr. 9 Feb 1815 Rathen parish to Eliz. SHAND might not just be the one found at the Land of Broomhill in 1841. New Aberdour is not very far from Rathen.

I'm convinced that Eliz Shand (d/o Eliz Shand), b 9/2/1815 @ Rathen, is not my Elizabeth, and I've found my Eliz on the censuses.

From her marriage rego: on 5/6/1867 @ 21 Berry Lane Aberdeen (St Nicholas), And. Sutherland a=44 s/o James + Barbara Sutherland MS Watson marr Elizabeth Shand a=46 d/o Robert + Jane Shand MS England.
The 1871 census of 21 Berry Lane shows Andrew Sutherland 44 (Scavenger), wife Elizabeth Sutherland 57, Wm Robertson 32, Alexr Shand 19. William R + Alexander Walker S are described as boarders (and Railway labourers), but we know from the 1851 + 1861 census that they're Eliz's sons. I think Alexr is also Andrew's son. Alexr would later change his name to AW Sutherland, and use this name when signing Eliz's death rego.

My g gran Elizabeth Massie MS Cowie's 1911 death rego gives her parents as Thomas Cowie, mason's labourer (reputed) + Elizabeth Shand afterwards wife of Andrew Sutherland, scavenger.

I think Robert + Jane Shand had 1 son (Alex) + 9 daurs, b abt 1800 thru 1823. The IGI has LDS member submissions for 5 daurs, but only 1 OPR extract (for the son, naturally). Aside from Alex + Eliz, I've only confirmed daur Helen Grieve MS Shand so far (the rego of Helen's 15/6/1887 death @ 60 High St Fraserburgh says she is the d/o Robert + Jane Shand MS England).

In view of your surname list I mention: I think Helen + William Grieve's grand son Alex b 8/12/1858 @ Crimond (s/o Alex + Ann Yule MS Grieve) marr Mary Jane Esson b 5/1/1864 @ Crimond (d/o Christian Esson). Helen's son-in-law Alex (and Alex's father) were @ Lothian, Crimond in 1851 (g son Alex is at home with his parents, next door to his gran in Fraserburgh in 1881). Mary Jane Esson is @ Longlegs, Crimond in 1881. I haven't found Longlegs on a map, but think it's less than 1km SW of Crimond village, which would place it halfway to Lothian.

Thanks for your observation - you weren't to know I had supplementary information, and it might have alerted me to my heading off on a wild goose chase.

Regards - Malcolm

Thanks Malcolm for the clarification about Elizabeth SHAND.

I believe I'm managed to push my search back one generation. John SHAND married Helen DAWSON 10 Apr 1784 Cluny. Their children all born Cluny are: Alexander (1785); George (1787) = Janet ESSON 1823; John (1790); and Barbara (1792) = Alexander ELDER 1820.

It appears that Helen DAWSON died Cluny 21 Apr 1794 & husband John SHAND died Cluny 2 Jan 1832 (does the MI indicate their ages?).

Descendants of Alexander ELDER include Janet (Jessie) who married George STEWART 1842 Cluny and their married children: Alexander Elder STEWART = Isabella; George STEWART = Margaret COOPER; James STEWART = Margaret MARTIN; Isobel Gray STEWART = William R. MATTHESON; and Charles STEWART = Catherine

Do these connections fit in anyone's tree?
