I am looking for a Ryder family from Castlepollard Area of County Westmeath. They lived there through the 1800s and and least 2 (Mary Ryder and her brother Fred) were there until the late 1940s. They are cousins of my Thompson line but I do not know where the connection is. Neither Mary nor Fred ever married. Mary died ca 1948-49. Nothing is known about Fred. My gg grandfather Michael Thompson was left with his Ryder cousins to be raised when his family went elsewhere (also unknown). I imagine that would have probably been ca 1845 as he was born ca 1840. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

I also am looking for information on the Ryder family from Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath. Simon Ryder and Mary Bowers Immigrated from Ireland around 1840 with their 6 children, Elizabeth, Maria, Margaret, Michael, Matthew and John. They settled in Louisiana. I have information on the family after they settled, so what I am searching for is information from Ireland. Thanks, Jennifer

If I can obtain any further information, I will relay it to you. I am thinking about hiring a researcher in Ireland to see if they can track down any information. I don't know if it will do any good, I have read somewhere that alot of the records were lost in a fire, but I think it ias worth a try. I do not have a birth or death date on Simon Ryder, born around 1810. His is buried in an unmarked grave close to my home. His wife, Mary, has a tomb stone with a death date and her age at the time of death. I have been told that his tomb stone was there 20yrs ago, but has been stolen. Thnaks again, Jennifer

I have been in touch with two people who are descendants
of the "American" Westmeath Ryders but as yet have not made the connection with the ones I am looking for. They are
probably the same family but we need the link. There was still a Ryder in Castlepollard as late at the 1940s. Susan

Are Simon and Mary Bower Ryder the parents of John Ryder who was married to Felicity Paul? Some family members say that John's parents never left Ireland. Your help will be appreciated.

I saw your message during a search of the "Rootsweb" site for Bower of Castlepollard. I understand that the name is sometimes written as "Bowers".

I was wondering if you had any information on the Bower family of Castlepollard; the local church records were apparently destroyed in a fire in 1863 and it is very difficult to construct the family.

My great great grandmother Stevens was born Mary Ann Bower in ca 1822 at Castlepollard. She came to Australia with a Thomas Bower, not her father or husband, and his 4 children, 3 of whom died on the voyage out. Thomas did not have a wife with him. He was born in ca 1798.

This is about all I have been able to find on Mary Ann. There was a Jane Bower who came out at about the same time and who was born in Castlepollard.
She was similar in age to Mary Ann. Her descendant who does family history has also been unable to find much on the Bowers of Castlepollard.

I have had one "strange" clue. Four of Mary Ann's children died of diptheria within a 4 month period in 1861. Two of the death certificates were signed by Patrick Bower, Uncle. Unfortunately, Patrick disappears from Victorian records soon after this (no death recorded nor marriage nor births of children) as well as having left no shipping record of his entry to Australia that we know of.

Anyway, any help or family tree outlines you can provide on the Bowers of Castlepollard in the 1800s would be appreciated.

Continuing to look for information regarding Simon Ryder. They came over in 1861 according to immigartion lists. Mary (Bower ?) Ryder is buried in Newell Cemetery in Deville, La. I was told that Simon's headstone was stolen around 1970's. Newell Cemetery was vandalized in mind 2000's and a lot of the headstones were broken. I posted a picture of Mary's headstone I took (you can see where it was reconnected).

Does anyone know if the Catholic Cemetery in Deville has records back into the late 1800's. Some of their children where buried in the Catholic Cemetery, so I feel that Simon and Mary were most likely Catholic.
