9. **Adsey Childres-1886
10 **David William - born 1867

I have the above listed on the 1860 Johnston Co.
Census, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910. And many of them in our Family Bible.

Dora Lee Childers Daugherty use to tell my Mother about Joshua Meilton
living in Arkansas, but the census 1900(Johnston County) NC, says he was born in Mississippi.

Family lore states that Jane Sellers Childers always talked about him being stranded and that soldiers had to get back anyway they could. He married Jane Sellers April of 1865. He worked for her Father- in- law a Sellers from N.C. When he had enough money he took his family and went West.

The family moved West and they stayed 1 or 2 years (may have been more) and then moved back to Smithfield/Selma NC for the rest of his life.
As a child Dora Lee Childers talked of going back over the Mississippi on a barge. They went to Johnston County NC (Smithfield area to stay).

Sometime in the late1880's Joshua and Jane decided to move and stay in Smithfield, NC.
They lived in Johnston County sometime after the Civil War until 1930's and some family probably is still in Smithfield , Four Oaks, Selma, NC area. It may be that some of his Children went back to MS or Ark. we lost contact with the Smithfield Childers after the Younger generation moved to Gastonia NC, Dover Del., and Florida.

Jane Sellers Childers went to the CSA soldiers reunions each year. He was in an article in the Smithfield Observer. April 24, 1923 Vol. 3 #69 Page 1 on the left side of the page. New Orleans was his last parade and visit to see his soldier friends.

Others mentioned in the article (as being from Johnston Co ) were:
C.H. Benson
another "Benson"
Ruffin Tomlinson
Wilson's Mills (which I think is all of the mill workers but I am not sure)
L.F. Peedin (near Princeton)
Concerning Joshua Meilton Childers name:
Mom said the family called him M.J., His tombstone says M.J. Childers
He is called:

M.J. in the 1880 census(South Smithfield, James in the 1900 West Selma),

Joshua in the 1910 census -Smithfield Township.

One census has him listed as James
This is the same guy, all the other family members match and the grandson
and a single Grandma Dora Lee were living with them.

And to really mix us up He is called "Jim" in the newspaper article
mentioned above.

I sent a note to :

J.H. Stepp about Joshua Meilton Childers

Can you help me find out where he "mustered." ???
Just thought I would see if you saw him in the records.

Ms. Nix:

I fear that I cannot shed much light on the place of birth of J.M. Childers.
I do note that a J.M. Childers served in Company A of the 38th Arkansas
Infantry, and there was a J.N. Childers in Company C of the 2nd Mississippi
Infantry as well.

Regards . . .

J.H. Stepp

Joshua Meilton was born December 26, 1844 (?) The Bible says 1844 and the census says 1842.

Some of our Childers use Childres and Childress. The census, marriage, and Obits sometimes show the different names. Most of our family used Childres and Childers.

We do not know where JM lived when he was young until the Civil War, nor do we know his parents first names. We could use some help.Joshua Meilton Childers parents....
Possibly from Ark. or Ms.

Here is more information I found in the Johnston County 1900 Census. Sarah is staying with Alexander and Allia A. Millinder. The census state that Sarah is "the sister of wife" - Allia A. Millinder. The 1850 Wayne County Census does not show Sarah since according to the 1900 census Sarah was born in 1851. Wayne Co. isn't to far from where Alexander and Allia lived(in Johnston County.)As stated in the earlier post Furney is listed as the parent of Allia A. Millinder at the wedding located a Alsey Sellers house (Johnston County Marriage Register- 11/30/1871) In the 1850 Wayne County Census house # 168 is the Millanders; Furnifold, Alsey (wife), Mary, Martha, Alsey(AKA Allie, Allia A.-name she used-documented). And also house # 162 is an Ingrahm household that includes: Joseph, Mary (wife), Sarah, Bryant, James, Susan, William, Matthew, and 2 other people. Please get back with me as I would like to see if you have any information that could help me fill in parts of my tree and talk with you more about this family. This is rather far-fetched but as often back then the children often took names of their Mother's maiden name. My ancestor Millinder Fiveash was married first to a Mashburn or Marshburn in Johnston county or maybe Hertford County. I have not been able to find out anything about her and saw you were working on the Millenders so thought I would try and see if you had ever even heard of a Millinder, whose first name was Millinder. Thank you, Helen

My mothers Woodard connection was Kedar(Kader) Woodard and Emma Lynch Woodard. Kedar Woodards parents were Henry Woodard who married a Sally Massey both of them from Johnston County NC and died before l904 before my mother was born to Elijah Lynch and Louisa Strickland 1904 Mother was adopted and raised by the Kedar Woodards after her mother died in child birth. Emma Lynch Woodard was sister of Elijah Lynch who died 1930 in Smithfield NC. Old folks home I think.
These Woodards and Lynchs and Masseys lived in Boonhill Township Princeton North Carolina.
I do not know of any Dickerson connection or Franklin County
NC connection to these people. I was told the Woodards came from Virginia early on to NC. Maybe they came by the way of Franklin County NC but I do not know.
