According to family records, I am a descendant of Joseph Bastedo who lived on Staten Island among the Huguenot and Dutch community. He married Judith Rycke. They in turn moved from Staten Island to where I do not know. His grandson William was born in South Brunswick, NJ and is buried in the Kingston Presbyterian Church cemetary in Kingston, NJ. His son William married Catherine Stewart, they had three children, son Nelson married Gertrude Suydam. My father, Henry Bastedo is their son, who was born in Brooklyn, NY. Where did the original Joseph Bastedo move to from Staten Island? To New Jersey? According to records I received from the Staten Island Historical Society Joseph was 49 in the 1706 census. He had six children, Louys, Rosanna, Joseph, Jan, Maria, Pieter. Can anyone share with me their Bastedo family history? You can e-mail me at

Hi Barbara...My gr-aunt is Gertrude Bastedo (Nelson's wife). I knew they had four children but I only had three names until you posted Henry's name. You didn't mention which son of Joseph's was the father of William Sr. I don't have Joseph's origins in NJ eather, but as you know, Somerset and Middlesex Co have a major portion of the Bastedos, especially Somerset Co. Marriage records for Nelson and Gertrude say he was from New Brunswick (Middlesex) and she from Six Mile Run (Somerset). But don't let that fool you, they're only a couple miles apart as is South guess is he moved to the close-nit Dutch community of Somerset Co. after the English took control of NY. Joseph's wife Judith Rycke (Also spelled Rychen) was the predecessor of the family name SUYDAM. Hense, her family may have had an influence where they moved to. All my Suydam relatives moved to this area about the same time...Please email me with which son of Joseph's was William's father. Also I don't know how much you have on this (our) line but I have some and would like to know what you have that I don't have..Looking forward to hearing from you...Ben

According to the information I received from my cousin, William, Sr.'s father was a John Bastedo who died when William was about ll years old. John lived in the New Brunswick region of Middles Clunty, NJ during the middle 1700's.
Gertrude and Nelson Bastedo had four children, Abram, Augusta, Nelson, and George.
George was my grandfather, b. 1859 in Brooklyn, NY. He married Sarah Morris. They had two sons, Harold and Henry. Henry was my father, b. 10-2-1894, d. 12-27-1968.
Harold had two children, Helen and George. Neither married. I have a sister, Laura.
If you have any information on John Bastedo, please let me know. I have a listing of wills from the NJ Archives but none for a John, only one I have a copy of and it does not list anything of note because he died intestate.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Barbara...Thank you for William Sr.'s origin and your lineage. To date, I haven't come across information on John since I have only recently begun to research the Bastedo line.
Do you post messages on Genform ? There is a lot of Bastedo activity there as well..Thanks again and I'll keep you posted if I locate John....Ben

Surnames: Bastedo
This John Bastedo everyone is refering to, could it be John G. Bastedo born in New Jersey in about 1788, married to Gertrude Vonk? If that's the case, email me. We all need to get together.
