Actually, i live in Las Vegas, Nevada. Most of my Ruane relatives live in Pittsburgh, PA, but i know a few live other places, i am assuming that we are all related somehow, Ruane is not a common name.

I live in New York, but will be over in Galway for a vacation in two weeks. Do you know the history of the Ruane surname in Galway / Mayo, it has a rich history? Especially back in the days of the Septs/O'Kelly era.
All my ancestors and most of my relatives are Ruane's. My third cousins all still carry the suranme Ruane. My G Grandfather change his surname from Ruane to Rowan back in the 1860's. You can bet that your ancestors are most likely from Galway or Mayo. Do you know any of your linage, when your ancestors came over, dates and names? I know that parts of my family moved to Boston, Calif, and PA if I remember corretly.

My mother's name was Ruane. She was born in Ballywater, Nr Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. Her Father was Darby Ruane and he had several brothers who emigrated to the US in the early 1900's. My mother had only sisters, the only one that stayed in Co. Mayo died unmarried.

I am looking for John P. Roane (Ruane) born 1831, perhaps in Athenry, Galway. Patrick and Cecilia were his mom & dad. John appears on 1850 Fed Census as living in Lowell, MA. Is there a link?

I am looking for any info on Bridgette "Delia" Ruane who married Nicholas Tamsen in Haverstraw NY. Delia came from Ireland in about 1885.

I am putting together a family tree and cannot find any mother /father/sibling info past my ggrandfather Martin Ruane who came from Foxhall Galway Co. in 1896 (born about 1874).
He listed that he had a brother in Niagra Falls but I found no records of anyone there by M C Ruane or Mr. C Ruane.
He settled in Carbondale, Pa. and raised a family of 6.

I found Ruane spelled a number of ways in census and BMD records. You might try soundex searches or spell the name any number of ways - Rowan, Ruayne, Rown, etc. Think of how it may heve been pronounced with a heavy brogue and that's how the keeper of record may have interpreted it.

By the way, my Ruanes came from the Athenry area of Galway to Waltham, Massachuesetts.

Good luck - Rick

Hi Rick,

I wanted to compare some notes with you. My Ruane's also came from around Athenry. My great grandfather, Bernard Ruane arrived here from ballymacward, Ireland (near Athenry) in 1903. He lived in Canton, Ma until his death in 1918 of teh flu epidemic. He had a few siblings living here as well. Can you give me the names of any of you family members here that I could compare. Also, do you know of any family in Ireland. I had a cousin that lived in a monestary in Salthill, Galway. His name was Brother Robert Ruane and he passed away a few months ago. I also have a few more cousins over there and a few that have come here recently and are scattered about. My great grandfather also had 7 children so there are lots of us in this area, in fact next month we will be holding our 70th annual Ruane Family Christmas party in Canton, Ma. All of us that have decended from Bernard Ruane attend, and the number is staggering.
