Howards from County Clare

Surnames: Howard, Short
Looking for any information on a Joseph Howard born between 1823-1833. He married Johannah Short birth 1830. Marriage was either in Ireland or USA. They settled in Chatfield, Minnesota. There is no known past family for these two, other than their children and recent family. I found on a census that they were from County Clare.

You are fortunate to have found a Census that says more than Ireland. Baptism and marriage records before 1864 are
Parish record. After 1864 Civil Registration took place and you would see both Parish and Civil Registration. I would imagine they married about 1850, average age 20 for women
25 for men.

Parish records for Co. Clare are not on line. Clare is 1 of 4 Counties who do not participate in an on line Irish History Foundation, fee for service but not for profit.
There is a Clare Geneology Center, see the Clare library but
commission work only. Like most of Ireland you will need to pay for genealogy unless you are lucky enough to come across some records donated by someone who has done the research already.
The earliest record used as a census substitute (census 95% destroyed)are the Tithe Applotments from 1820-1839 throughout Ireland. Only heads of households are named.

109 Howard's. So will go with the Shorts as its easier to start there.

Parish of Killofin.

Howard: Conor, Michael John

Parish Clooney
Howard: James x 2 and Richard

Clooney Parish John Short, Patrick Short,Laurence Short & Terence Short

Killofin Parish Edward Short, Thadeus

By the time of Griffith Valuation 1855 there are now 110
Howard's and 8 in Parish of Killofin, names are
James, Edmund, Margaret, Michael, Denis & Patrick

In Parish Clooney 1 Mary Howard. Probably women listed would be widows as rarely is property in a woman's name. If widowed she would need to apply to the landlord to change
a tenancy to her name.

No Short's.

There are Howard's listed in the commercial directories for Clare but no Joseph's.
No Short's in the directories 1824-1894.

Look for names that Joseph and Johannah named their male children. First girl should be after Johannah or her mother, lst. male after Joseph or his father.

Are they Catholic or Protestant? I have a CD with Protestant/Church of Ireland marriages 1845-1862.
these also can be seen on

Currently there are technical difficulties or I would have had a look but you can do this yourself.

Marriages just have the bride and grooms father listed.
Parish/Place and date.

You can use the search on the main page or scroll down and look at left side UK/Ireland, click on this and then the next page down to Ireland(7).

you don't mention what year the census was in which you found the reference to Clare.

The Clare Library has an outstanding on-line (and best of all - FREE) genealogy & family history website. Go to and select 'genealogy & family history'. Also try the Clare Past Forum accessible through the same website. It is full of very knowledgeable & helpful people with lots of local knowledge.

If you are on Facebook, there is a Clare Genealogy Group which could also be helpful.

Good luck!
The CLare Library is not associated with the CLare Heritage & Genealogical Centre, which is a profit making organisation who do commissioned research only. They have no records available to the public.
