Does anyone have any information about Gilbert Dewhurst please. He started his stage career in 1939 and was firstly in the Lancaster Rep Company. He joined the Court Players at Tunbridge Wells and then moved on to Keighley, Leeds, Westcliffe and Worthing. He was also in a revival of 'Street Scene' in London, followed by working with a rep company at Scarborough.

He also played seasons at Sheerness and Colwyn Bay.

I have a signed picture of Gilbert Dewhurst which he gave to my mother-in-law when she was a little girl. He stayed at their guest house at Morecambe when he was in Rep.

Dear Jacqui

Many thanks for your message. I have a few career details for Gilbert, including a press cutting with photograph. I have been trying to establish whether there is a family connection between Gilbert and 'our' theatrical Dewhurst family (ref our book 'Jonathan Dewhurst - The Lancashire Tragedian'), and we know that he certainly appeared with at least one of Jonathan's sons.

Since posting my message I have discovered that Gilbert was born in October/December 1916 and that his mother's maiden name was Quinton. This information doesn't appear to link him with our Dewhursts but I should now be able to obtain a copy of his birth certificate.

I am interested to hear that you have a signed picture of Gilbert - do you have any of other Dewhurst (or Rivers) actors? In the circumstances you will probably not wish to part with it, but if you do we would happily pay a few pounds for it. If you don't wish to part with it, would it be possible for you to let us have a photocopy - we would of course be pleased to pay postage, copying, etc.?

You can contact us on

Again, many thanks for your interest.

Hi Susan,
I hope you are still monitoring this site. According to "The Stage" archives I found the following:

June 1941 to Sept 1942 - with The Players at the Royalty, Morcambe.
Nov 1944 and Dec 1945 - with the Fortesque Players at the Royal, Rochdale and the Hulme Hippodrome.
July 1946 - with Evlyne Dissart's Repertory Company at the Pavilion, Sheerness
June 1947 - with Stanley Ravenscroft at Colwyn Bay
Aug 1947 - with the Night Errant's Co. at the New Royal, Norwich
May 1949 to Aug 1950 - with Harry Hanson's Court Players at the Empire, Peterborough as actor and director.
1953-57 - became a literary agent and play presenter
1957-78 (at least) Director of Entertainment with Islington Borough Council

Maybe you know all this! Nothing in the archives about all those other places you mention.
