My Gagnier Family History

I have been fortunate that the history of my branch of the Gagnier (Gonyea, Gonyier, Ganya, Gonyez, Gagner, Gyera) family in Western Wisconsin/NE Iowa has been fairly well recorded by historians and family members. Going back 6 generations, Calude Gagnier is recorded to have farmed an 80 acre plot in French Town (Prarie du Chien) Wisconsin in 1794. His wife was Mary Anne Labuche and they had 6 children togather. My line goes from Claude to Basil to Norbert to Basil to Clarence to Keith and myself. I am of course interested in filling in the blanks for memebers not in my direct line. I am also looking for the origin of Claude and Mary Ann.

I am related to Mary Ann Labuche/Charles Menard marriage. Trying to find Mary Ann's origins. Her father was Pierre LaBuche and mother Marianne. Am looking south in Illinois, and believe mother came from Louisiana. Charles Menard was born In Chambly, Quebec. Have contacted another Menard cousin, and will be exchanging info soon and will start search. Do you have any further info on her?

Your lead concerning Mary Ann Labuche origin the best I found so far. Have you found additional information since August? Sorry about the delay answering, lost my hard drive in early Sept. and just re-discovered this thread via a search.

Mary Ann was 75 years old in 1860 census. Says she was born in Wisconsin. I will check other censuses to see if the place remains the same.

Found some Labuche's on St. Louis Gen. Society website. Do not know if there is a connection, but they are Mulatto also. There is another Labuche family from Chippewa Co. Wis I will check census. Getting no hits on Pierre at all. Thank you for getting back to me.

Mary Ann Menard is mentioned in "History of Crawford County" (Wisconsin), p. 423. "among the other inhabitants of notoriety at that time (1816) , was a Mrs. Menard, of mixed African and white blood. She came from some one of the French villages below, and was then married to Charles Menard, a Canadian of French extraction." It notes she was previously married to DuChouquette and Gagnier. She was the first person to practice the "healing art" in the area and served as a midwife. She continued to practice even after a surgeon arrived at Ft. Crawford and apparently was highly regarded for her skills and "yarb" (herb) drink. She was locally know as Aunt Mary Ann. She is also mentioned in "Prairie du Chien: French, British, American," at p199: "She was a good nurse and midwife and used herbs for treatment."

I know this post is over 15 years old, but I thought I’d take a chance and see if any more information was uncovered in regards to Mary Ann LaBuche. In particular, I would like to learn more about her parents. In this post, it was mentioned that her parents were Pierre and Marieanne (Riche) LaBuche, but I’m coming up short on finding this anywhere else.
