Does anyone know why the spelling of the Janot name changed to Jeannot? Also what does "dit Lachapelle" mean after the name. (as in Robert Janot dit Lachapelle)

Are you also descendant? It is a very long story why the name changed. In short, Marin.. son of Robert Janot was recruited by the french government to go to Canada to help fight against the Iroquois indian attacts in Montreal. He had to change his name and chose a town he grew up in, in France. If you are a descendant please contact me as I have alot of information and I know other descendants that have done extensive research.

The following sites explain ‘dit names’

A very good explanation:

Another good one:

Explanation of ‘dit’ names:

A list of family names with the ‘dit’ name:

‘Dit’ names applied to the whole family. Its use stopped early in the twentieth century, although a few kept them longer. My great-grandmother who died in 1966 still referred to her ‘dit’ name: Montpetit dit Potvin. Don’t let anyone tell you that they HAD to take ‘dit’ names. They didn’t. Sometimes they took the extra names themselves, sometimes it was given to them by others - to describe their physical appearance, their origin, or
their personality, etc.

I am a descendant of the Jeannotte dit Lachapelle line that settled in New Hampshire. Except that my GGG-grandfather David Jeannotte moved to Manitoba with this wife Marie Henriette Bedard in 1882. I haven't been able to go back further than David's parents. They were Joseph Jeannotte and Susan Zoe Prenevault married about 1848 in either Québec or possibly Vermont. Do you know anything about this family.

Thanks. Roger

Hello! One of my maternal great-Grandmothers was Malvina LaChapelle (father: Narcisse), and she claimed to have been from the St. Francois du Lac/Trois Rivieres area of PQ. She may have been Native. What can you tell me about her surname that the general surname histories can't? Please respond via my e-mail account: thanks!
