MONTGOMERY, William (1807-1891) SC AL MS also KEENE, LEVER, WEEMS

lived in Choctaw County MS - post for adjoining or nearby counties
may have had relatives in Yalobusha County MS

I am trying to find information on the ancestry of my great-great grandfather William MONTGOMERY (1807-1891) b. 22 FEB 1807, d. 13 MAY 1891. Conflicting census records indicate that he may have been born in SC, TN, or AL. SC is most likely. He settled permanently in Choctaw Co., MS in 1838 or 1839. On 7 Aug. 1838, he leased 240 acres in Section 16 of Township 17 for 99 years. Section 16 of each township was leased to provide support for the schools. There is a Masonic emblem on his tombstone in South Union Cemetery, Choctaw Co., MS.

I have unverified information that William's father was Andrew MONTGOMERY b. Mecklenburg County NC ca. 1785. Andrew's father was James MONTGOMERY b. Lancaster County PA ca. 1735/45. James' parents were John MONTGOMERY Sr. and Martha ? both born in Ireland and immigrated ca. 1735.

My great-great grandmother MONTGOMERY was Martha Ann ? (1816-1888) b. ca. 1816, d. 10 SEP 1888. Conflicting census records indicate that she may have born in SC, GA, or AL. SC is most likely. According to the 1880 Census, her parents were born in SC. Her maiden name was possibly WEEMS. There was a marriage bond for a William MONTGOMERY and Martha WEEMS dated 29 DEC 1833 in Jefferson County AL, but I have no proof that this is my William and Martha. Another clue is the death certificate of the youngest daughter of William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY. Her name was Sarah (Sallie) MONTGOMERY MOSS. The death certificate in 1928 lists her mother as Mary W??????. The rest of the maiden name is illegible - maybe Wiemmes.

I have found 3 deeds in Jefferson County AL showing the purchase and subsequent sale of land by a William Montgomery and spouse Martha Ann (possibly Weems) Montgomery dated between 1833 & 1835.

William, Martha and their children were members of New Zion Baptist Church, Choctaw County MS.

The children of William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY were:
Jonathan - b. AL ca. 1834 d. TX 1882, private C.S.A. 1862-1865, spouse Mary Elizabeth
RICHARDS b. AL 1834 d. TX 1917, their children - William George. b. MS 1854 d. TX 1924, Emma Jean b. MS ca. 1856, Lou Ella/Louisa b. MS ca. 1858, Martha Ann b. MS ?.
Amanda Jane - b. AL (1836-1890), spouse (1) William Eli BLAIN (2) John R. BAYS.
Nancy Ann - b. AL (1839-1882), spouse James Wesley BLAIN b. SC, (1832-1864).

There was a John Montgomery in Yalobusha County rather early, who was born in Penn., 13 Jun 1789, and who lived in New York in 1811 (where he was a Mason). Prior to coming to Miss., he was in Obion Co., Tenn. He was married twice: first to Joanna ____ (1795-1843). She died in Coffeeville and is buried in the town cemetery. He then married Mary ____ (widow of Elijah Devault), but tradition says he left her when she was pregnant with son John. He appears to have gone to Texas, possibly Houston Co., by 1860. A Masonic tribute to him states he removed from Yalobusha Co. to Crockett Co., Texas in 1848, and then to Anderson Co. in 1855, where he died 27 Jul 1874.

Could he have been a brother to your James Montgomery?

Thank you for your response. John Montgomery b. 1789 in PA may have been a relative. He probably wasn't a brother of my James Montgomery because my James was born ca. 1735-45 in PA. I will keep your message for future reference.

Hi, Mark. I have a distant relationship to Andrew Montgomery. The LDS files show him as brother to John Montgomery. John Montgomery and Mary Clark had a child, Martha "Patsy" Montgomery, who md. Stephen Alexander Jr. in either Mecklenburg or Cabarrus Co. NC. Stephen and Patsy's children settled in Pontotoc Co. MS in the 1850's. I am descended through their son, McCamey Clark Alexander. McCamey was in Fayette Co. TN in 1850, md. Mary Knox in Marshall Co. MS in 1852, and was in Pontotoc Co. by 1854.

You may want to do further research in Marshall and Pontotoc Counties as there were a fair number of Montgomery's in these counties.

John Montgomery of Yalobusha was apparently married to Joanna Demoss. They married in about 1815, probably in Tennessee. She was the daughter of William Demoss (1768-1836). Do you know of any children of John and Joanna? There were several Montgomeries listed as litigants in a land dispute in Carroll Co., TN in 1855. Joanna's sisters were involved.

John Montgomery and Joanna Demoss were married 16 Nov. 1815 in Williamson Co., TN. They moved to Yalabusha Co., MS from TN shortly after 1840. Their children were: Thomas C. (b. 1819); Mary Emily (b. 1821); James W. (b. 1823); A. B. (b. 1825); Sarah Druscilla (b. 1828), Catherine E. (b. 1830); Mahala Ann (b. 1832); Samuel Allen (b. 1834) and Robert M. (b. 1838). After Joanna's death in 1843, John married Mrs. Mary Devault. Only one child, William, born abt. 1844, was from this marriage.

My line descends from Mary Emily, who married Joel Ham (b. 1816). They were married in Carroll Co., TN on 23 Dec. 1840. One child, John Montgomery Ham, was born in TN. Three others were born in Yalabusha Co., MS. The family moved on to Titus Co., TX before 1860. Were Martha Hinson (age 16) and Monroe Hinton (age. 12) related? They were in the Joel Ham household in Yalabusha Co. in 1850.
