Can you elaborate any more on the dates for the people mentioned in your message. I am researching the Penman family from Scotland, namely George Penman, DOB abt 1714 in Scotland. This family (wife's name unknown) lived in Prince Edward Island, Canada in the early 1800's. One of the daughters of this George Penman, namely Christy Penman (1770-1811) married Hugh Montgomery and they were the ancestors of the famous PEI author, Lucy Maude Montgomery, who wrote "Anne of Green Gables."
Christy was the daughter of George Penman, who came to the Island after the fall of Louisburg as paymaster for the garrison which took over St. John's Island.(Later called PEI)
According to page 366 of Clint Morrison's History of Lot 11, PEI: John Ramsay or nicknamed "Justice John" married Margaret Penman, resided at Port Hill, Lot 13. (Margaret was a daughter of George Penman who had been the Paymaster of the Garrison under Lord Rollo in 1758}

Margaret was a sister to Christy and I am descended from this line.
"On the western shore of Richmond Bay lived a family by the name of Penman. They were United Empire Loyalists, who left America at the close of the War of Independence and came to Canada. They had been people of birth and wealth in the U S but having forfeited all their property were miserably poor. The two daughters Nancy and Betsy, however, were so remarkably beautiful that they had lovers by the score."

If anybody can elaborate any more on this family and their Scottish roots, I would like to hear from you.

I have several Penman's that show up in my Scotland research. I have not been able to link them to a common point, however. Though I doubt there is a direct tie of my Penmans and yours, unless one goes back a long time, I provide the following---just in case.

The line of current interest is thought to be Robert Penman, md Christian Muir, son Robert christened Oct 13 1816, Cockpen, Midlothian, md Helen Nielson Jan 13, 1837, Newbattle, Midlothian, son Robert md Mary Ann McIntosh Oct 21, 1880 LaSalle County IL. Robert and Helen with family came to America arriving NY on May 9, 1863 aboard the Monarch of the Sea. The family settled in Mercer County PA, but the youngest Robert went on to IL where he married Mary Ann, before moving on to MO, KA and OK.

Then I have a Janet Penman, b March 1, 1801 in Inveresk, Midlothian, md William Duncan October 30, 1830 in Midlothian, and d May 26, 1886 and buried in LaSalle IL. It was her son Mungo Duncan that married Mary Ann McIntosh's sister Margaret.

And then there was a Jane Ramage, b 1818, Borthwick, Midlothian, married John Penman November 16, 1838 Newbattle, Midlothian. John died pre 1851, and Jane came with children to America arriving NY on the Constellation on September 3, 1854. She married a fellow passenger, widower James Snedden. James died in the Civil War. Jane and family remained in PA---Westmorland, Northumberland and Schuylkill Counties---Shenandoah, Schuylkill being her last residence.

Was going to send this off-board, but the fancy script they use for email addresses was not legible to me. If you wish to correspond further, contact me off the board and I will be happy to expand on any of the above. But I doubt we are talking the same Penmans.

Well, what a surprise. I think I'm distantly related to George Penman. George's father was born in 1669 in Torreyburn, Fife to Alexander Penman and Elizabeth Erskine. They had another son, Duncan, born in 1685. I am from Duncan's line.

There does seem to be two distinct lines of Penmans. One group who started in Dumfermline in Fife and moved west to Culross, Torreyburn, and thence into Airth, Stirling. All along the north shore of the Firth of Forth. The other line is in Midlothian and spread into Lanarkshire. The two lines were distinct back as far as the early 1600's so I have no idea if the lines will meet or whether there are two different families.

It would certainly be interesting to have a DNA sampling done amongst the male Penmans.
