I have 'lost' my family of Rathbones who disappeared from Birmingham England some time after 1882. GEORGE RICHARD RATHBONE married EMILY GRACE COTTERILL in 1880, and had a son,who I have traced. However, I can find no deaths for either of them in England. Did they emigrate? Can you help\/

Please contact me if you wish to know about the Rathbones in S.A have all documents and photos. Would be interested to find out if there are still any relations in England. I know that my g.g.grandfather was born on a boat called the Caractucas Reliance sailing to S.A and was named after the boat.

Dear Deborah, I have 'lost' my Rathbones, and think they may have emigrated. George Richard Rathbone married Emily Grace Cotterill in 1881,in Dudley England, and had George Edward Thomas ('Tom') in 1883. He fought in the Boer war, and ended up in Austalia in 1916, where he joined the Anzac forces, eventually being killed in Belgium in 1917. I can find no deaths or trace of his parents, his grandfather being next-of-kin on his army papers. It would be great if you could help!!
Regards Elaine.

Hi Elaine, the information that I have is with my father who lives in another city in S,A, I will be visiting him over the Christmas season. I will then be able to get all documents regarding the Rathbones. I have a good feeling that your 'lost' Rathbones and our Rathbones have a connection. So please bear with me a little longer and I will get back to you regarding this matter in the new year. If I do come across any further info I will let you know.

Dear Elaine, I managed to see some clippings that my father had kept of his greatgrandfather, but their was no mention of a George Rathbone or a Emily. they showed a picture of a Mrs Rathbone (no first name given)in the newspaper article and they mentioned my g.g.grandfather who owned land with the Zulu cheifs in Natal and introduced sugar cane and paw-paws into the region. My father mentioned that all the South African Rathbones are related but not to others around the globe, but I do know for a fact that they do come from England, they did not say where from or when. I am sorry to dissapoint you Elaine, if I come across anything else regarding the Rathbone, I will contact you. I am going to be writting to my grandmother who was married to a Rathbone, maybe she will be able to enlighten me on the subject.

Maybe I have a connection ?

I'm looking for more info on the RATHBONE's from Birmingham, Warwickshire.

I belive I'm related to these people:

Thomas Rathbone B:1811c Birmingham, Warwickshire
married a
Sarah ? B:1809c Birmingham, Warwickshire

In the 1851 Census record it shows the family lived 5 Grosvenor Street, Birmingham, St Peter, Warwickshire.
It looks like the had a family business? as it has Thomas down as "MASTER IORN FOUNDER EMPLOYING 7 MEN".

These children were at the same address:

- William Rathbone B:1831c
- Emma Rathbone B:1833c
- George RATHBONE B:1840c
- Elizabeth Rathbone B:1837c
- Annie & Betsy Rathbone B:1844c (twins ?)

All children born: Birmingham, Warwickshire

The twins were being looked after by Thomas mother Mary RATHBONE B:1782c Solihull,Warwickshire

Could this be the George you are looking for ?
