Surnames: Aadson, Oddson, Asen, Aadsen
Looking for relatives or family history for the name Aadson or Oddson as spelled in Norway. My great grandparents were John Aadson (Oddson) and Karen Holland. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Any Help with how to find relatives overseas would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Aad/Aud/Odd is a common first name in Norway. More information is needed to locate the family in Norway.

According to the 1900 census for Oak Gulch, Day county, South Dakota, the family arrivd in the US in 1892:

John Audsen, born Mar 1860
Karen Audsen, born Oct 1863
Carl J. Audsen, born May 1885
Josephine Audsen, born Jul 1887

The 1910 census confirms that the family arrived in 1892.

I suspect that Karen's last name may have been "Håland". There are many places with that name. It could very well come from Rogaland (near Stavanger).

The S.S. Parisian arrived in Quebec on 5 Nov 1892 (from Liverpool. I see the following passengers:

Karen Audson, wife, 28 years old
Karl (?) Audson, child, 5 years old
------ Audson, child, 3 years old

Destination: Bristol, South Dakota (This is in Day county).
The names are difficult to read, but I see this as a possible match, Karen and the childen following John to Day county, South Dakota.

Brian, thank you so much for the information. I do have John and Karen's place of burial, as it is very near where i live. I just couldn't figure out how to get past them to find their parents information. I wish i had the knowledge you have in finding out this kind of information. Thanks again.

Census records all seem to confirm the family arrived in 1892. Sadly, most of the emigration records from Stavanger were destroyed by fire. Do you have any further information at all that might give a clue as to where the family may´ahve come from?

The World War One draft registration card for Emil Aadson, born 14 Aug 1897, lists "Father's Birthplace" as "Stavanger, Norway".

The Stavanger area is where I placed the Håland name also, so this does narrow things down a bit.

Both Bertinius and John left Norway for Day county, SD. John stayed, but Bertinius ended up in Seattle, Washington.

John apparently used the family name "Johnsen" until he arrived in America. Then he used his father's family name "Aadsen".

Remember the passenger list for the "Parisian" I sent you earlier? The names were:

Karen Aadsen
Karl Aadsen
Ingarda Aadsen

Now we know where "Ingarda" comes from, so this confirms that record also.
