Letha Ann WIGLEY was born SORRELS about 1826 in Holmes county area, daughter of David SORRELS and wife Sarah Charlotte, maiden name unknown. David died about 1838/39 in Holmes county. Letha's siblings were: Lizzie SORRELS McBRIDE, Nicy Ann SORRELS McBRIDE, Ferdinand SORRELS, Francis M. SORRELS, Benjamin F. SORRELS, & David SORRELS (Jr.). In the 1850 census, Sarah Charlotte had remarried Ellison EDWARDS, was still living in Holmes county, with four SORRELS sons & three EDWARDS sons. Letha and husband Jefferson WIGLEY were also in Holmes county with two sons and two daughters. Have been unable to determine parents of David SORRELS, Sr. or Sarah Charlotte ______?. My ancestor was Benjamin F. SORRELS, married Narcissa YOUNG in 1855, and moved to Carroll parish, LA ca 1855. He was later in Jackson parish and VanZandt county, TX after Narcissa's death in 1862. Any leads on SORRELS & YOUNG, or marriage records for these people would be appreciated. Thank You, J. J. Goss

A direct quote from the book, The Henry Muirheid/Muirhead family of Virginia and Mississippi, page 33:

"In April 1850, Minerva Muirheid, wife of Nicholas Muirheid, maiden name believed to have been MacDonald, born approximately 1802, in South Carolina, died of typhoid fever. The name McDonald was later used as a middle name for a Muirhead male. Minerva was forty-eight years of age when she died, and was the mother of eleven children: James, Gresham Stranger, Pleasant, William DeKalb, Wayne, Minerva, Margaret, John (I or Ike ?), Napoleon, George R., and Zachary Taylor. At the time of Minerva's death , Nicholas was engaged in farming and construction with his son, James. By the year 1860, Nicholas was living in Attala County, Mississippi, with his children, John I., age twenty; George R., age fifteen; and Zachariah, age fourteen; daughter Minerva, twenty-four, with her husband, Henry D. Dennis, age 33, and their children, Charley, age two and Margaret, age 8/12."

"By the year of 1870, Nicholas Muirheid awas living with his son, William DeKalb, in Holmes County, Mississippi. Wiliam DeKalb married Letha Ann and according to the 1860 census for Holmes County, had the following children: Francis, a son, age thirteen; daughter Nicy Ann, age eleven; and John, age five. William DeKalb's brother, Gresham Stranger, was enumerated directly beneath him on the census. "'The 1870 Census for Holmes County'" enumerated William DeKalb and his wife Letha, with John, age fourteen, Jacob, age three, and Nicholas Muirheid, age seventy-two. By 1880, William DeKalb and Letha were enumerated with Jacob, age thirteen; Nicey A., age twenty nine (Note: The census taker wrote in what appeared to be "widow" by the name Nicey A.); William, age seven; Charley, age six; and Francis, age four. According to Muirhead family history, Nicholas Muirheid died prior to the 1880 census as a result of a tree-falling accident. William, Charley, and Frances, names in the 1880 Census, are children who probably belong to Nicey Ann and her husband, William Muirhead, probably dead."

The book goes on to speculate that Nicey Ann was probably the daughter from a previous marriage of Letha Ann's to a Wigley.

Hope this helps.

I am responding to your message on the Holmes co., Miss. message board regarding the Nicholas Muirhead family. It mentioned one of my ancestors, Letha Ann Sorrels Wigley Muirhead. Letha Ann was the older sister of my gggrandfather Ferdinand Sorrels. The 1850 Holmes Co. census lists Letha Ann, age 24, as married to Jefferson Wigley, age 28. They have five children: Sarah J. age 8, James P., age 6, Frances, age 4, Nicey Ann, age 2. They had John David in 1855.
It was great reading about what happened to Letha after Jefferson died. I did not know she had remaried. I guess Sarah and James were married and out of the home by the time she married Mr. Muirhead.

William DeKalb Muirhead had two sons with Letha Ann Sorrells-Wigley. One son was Jacob born about 1867 according to the 1870 and 1880 census of Holmes co MS. I lose him after 1880.

The other son was William MacDonald "Mack" Muirhead who married Mary Jane Rowell and migrated to TX in about 1892. Mary is in Ellis co TX 1910 as Mary J. Mooshead (divorced from Mack), in Cherokee co TX 1920 as Mattie Morehead. She died Nov 16 1920 at Troup in Cherokee co and is buried in the Blackjack Cemetery near Troup. We lose Mack after his divorce from Mattie prior to 1910. He may have returned to MS.

I have an extensive tree on Mack's children and their descendants to the present date. Macks's son Luther Washington Muirhead was wed to Pearl Octavie Duncan and they had two sons that settled in Smith co TX by 1930 (Jessie Donald and William Vernon) and both of them married Willaby sisters (Janie Elizabeth and Jeanette Elaine, respectively) and settled in Montgomery co TX after 1930.

The Muirhead's are still rooted in Montgomery County.

Rick,

There is an error here in your report.

The William "Macdonald" Muirhead and the William "Nick" Muirhead" are the same person.

Mack's first wife was Mary Emily McClellan and she was the mother of Anna Muirhead born in Holmes co in 1880.
