(WALLER) MERCER, her parents residents in Williamsburg. b Fredericksburg, VA, Jun 12, 1839. The ch of Daniel BLAIN & wf were b: John Mercer BLAIN, Apr 30, 1869; Randolph Harrison, Jan 12, 1871; Samuel Stuart, Oct 18, 1872; Hugh Mercer BLAIN, Dec 26,1874 [md Mary Moore WINSTON]; Daniel, Nov 23, 1877, died Oct 28, 1879; Robert Waller, Jun 19, 1879; Cary Randolph, Mar 11, 1882. The paternal grfather Rev. Daniel BLAIN, prof of languages and mathematics Washington College (now Washington and Lee Univ), Lexington, Va. He was a native of SC, and md Mary HANNA, d/o Matthew HANNA, Esq., of Lexington, Va. The maternal grfather of the present Daniel BLAIN was Randolph HARRISON of Clifton, Cumberland co. Va, who md Mary RANDOLPH, d/o Thomas RANDOLPH of Dungenness, Goochland co. Va. Mary Louisa, wf of Rev. Daniel BLAIN, is a grdaughter of Col Hugh MERCER, of Fredericksburg, was a s/o General Hugh MERCER, who fell at the battle of Princeton. Her maternal grfather was Dr. Robert Page WALLER, of Williamsburg. The subject of this sketch entered the Conf army as a private in the Rockbridge Artillery; he was made ordnance sergeant on staff of General William N. PENDLETON, chief of artillery for the Army of Northern Va. served from May, 1861, till Apr, 1865, and surrendered with Lee at Appomattox. Randolph Harrison BLAIN, attorney-at-law, Louisville, Ky, his only brother, enlisted as a private in the Richmond Howitzers, was commissioned first lt in the State Line troops, and then first Lt of Jackson’s horse artillery, which company he was commanding at close of the war. Both brothers were wounded in the service. Rev. Daniel BLAIN was pastor at Collierstown, Rockbridge co. VA 1867-71, since which time he has filled his present pastorate at Christiansburg, Montgomery co. Va.

Dr. Joseph B. Winston, president of the Valley Female Seminary, died Sat (Nov. 17) at his home in Waynesboro, Va.

He was a brother of Captain Frank V. Winston & Colonel William A. Winston, of Louisa. He was the uncle of Mrs. John Somerville, Mrs. Ryland Gwathmey, Messrs. James & Thomas S. Winston, & Mrs. Ernest L. Bolling, all of this city.
