know what place is where.:)

Happy hunting..:)

Milton is now an area in Gravesend. It lies just to the east of the town centre & is beside the River Thames.
My gt. grandfather William Lawrance was said to have been born there (although there seems to be no record he was born at al!!).
He was a Waterman on the Thames & many of the families in this area of Gravesend got their living from the river.

BLIGH & CARLTON Ancestors: 1800s Kent

Searching for family connections to gr gr grandfather, James Bligh born circa 1860/62, and also his spouse Julia Carlton
born circa 1860/62 in England.

Info on their son's death certificate (James Frederick Bligh
my gr grandfather) says James' parents were both born in
England, but it doesn't say where. We are supposed to have
relatives or cousins in Canterbury, but I'm not sure if that's the Bligh or the Carlton side.

James and Julia's children (as far as I know)
Frances, Lizzy, Louisa (?) Maynard (aka Wick) and Jack Bligh (who is supposed to have died in Australia according to family story) and then my gr grandfather James Frederick Bligh b. 1882-Aug-09 Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent.
He married Harriet Jordan Dines b.1885-Mar-01 Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent.

James emigrated to Western Canada on the HMS Rainbow about 1910. His wife Harriet followed about 4 years later (1914)
with their two children: Harriet and James who were also
born in Ramsgate.

Any help on tracing family members in England will be

Thank you,

Sorry if my line up of surnames is confusing, my Mortimer ancestor Joseph Henry Mortimer born 1875 came from E Yorkshire. I listed ALL my surnames..perhaps I should only list those for Ramsgate, Kent which are: BLIGH, CARLTON, DINES, JORDAN DINES. I apologize for the confusion.

Thanks, Gerrie

I am trying to link up with others who are searching for those who have the family name Johncock which is my wife's family name. Her Granfather was born in Minster, Thanet, Kent in 1885. We have found links which take his family back to Canterbury where the name was originally spelled as Jancocke in the 16th century

My late mother's maiden name was Johncock. I have her family tree which goes back to Robert Johncock born at St. Nicholas at Wade in May 1820 and believe that other members of the family have fuller records. I would be very interested to know more about the information you have gathered. The earliest date I have seen for Johncocks in Kent is 1602 - there seem to have been quite a number of them in the Thanet area from that time. It has always been my understanding that they were a Huguenot family, which is certainly would be possible in terms of date and location. As this is a relatively unusual surname I am sure that we must all be related somehow!

Terry White has supplied my cousin with many details and links for our family back to Den'is Jancocke who came to Kent from Belgium (then Spanish Netherlands) in the 1500's to escape religious persecution.
My maternal grandmother's name was Johncock and, coincidentally, my paternal grandmother's maiden name was Allum. We may be related from two directions!
