Mournin Brown was my 4th great grandmother. She was born 1810 in North Carolina. She died 1876 in Gilmer,Georgia. She married Jesse William Burrell. He was born 1805 in South Carolina. He died 1868 in Gilmer,Georgia. They had 9 children: Kimbrelin(1825-1898 my 3rd great grandfather) Timothy Titus(1827-1860/1870) Nancy(1828-?) Simpson Mix(1832-1904) Spencer A(1835-1893) Mary Ann(1837-1864) Sarah A(1840-1908) Julia Ann(1843-1875) Jesse William Jr(1844-1920) According to the Pickens County Georgia Heritage Book Mournin's parents are Andrew Brown and Sarah Reed. Sarah Reed is repoerted to be full blooded Cherokee Indian. I don't have any information on Andrew Brown or Sarah Reed. Does anyone know who Sarah Reed is and have any information? Jesse William Burrell Jr applied for Cherokee Citizenship but was rejected. He cited Mournin as his Cherokee heritage. Can anyone please help me? Thank you.

Hmmm, my Brown information is very similar to yours. My Browns are supposed to be Cherokee [through Fisher mother in 1700's]. I have rejected Guion Miller applications from a James Jackson Blackburn & Hugh Burdit "Bud" Meeks [place of residence when application submitted, Gilmer Co., GA.] claiming Cherokee blood through relative Robert Fisher Brown Sr. [1759-1840]. One of Robert's sons was William Brown. William married a Mourning/Morning Smith [reported to be Cherokee/part Cherokee]. Wiliam's brother Jesse Brown, married Morning's sister, Sarah Smith. In my Brown genealogy file, there are Burrells, & even the location of Burrell/Burrell's Mill mentioned. Some of my Browns & Brown ancestors are from SC. [many near GA. border & Pendleton SC.]. There are Reeds in my Brown genealogy file, & a Reedsville is also mentioned.

Crystal, if you'd like to exchange genealogy files & related genealogy information, let me know.

Hi Marshall. There was a Burrell Mill. The property that Mournin and Jesse are buried on is where it was. You can still see where the wheel was that turned from the water of the creek. I've seen information on other sites where Jesse Jr. claimed the Cherokee blood comes from Andrew Brown and not Sarah Reed/Reid. But I've seen where Andrew Brown is buried on top of Brown's Mountain because no church would let him be buried in their cemeteries because he was supposedly an Atheist. I can't find anything on who Sarah's or Andrew's parents are. It's a mystery. I would love to share any information.

Hi Kym. I think we are 3rd cousins. I'm related to Mournin and Jesse through their son Kimbrelin and his wife Elizabeth McClure. I would love to share information with you. I've seen on other sites where Andrew Brown is buried on top of Brown's Mountain because no church would allow him to be buried in their cemeteries because he was supposedly an Atheist. Sarah and Andrews parents are a mystery to me.

Hi Crystal, thanks for the information. Do you know of any other Guion Millar applications or Dawes packets which were filed on this line of Browns, or mention this line of Browns? Two of my ancestors in this line filed [rejected] Guion Miller applications claiming Robert Fisher Brown Sr. [1759-1840] was the source of their Cherokee blood, through Robert's Cherokee mother's father. Those individuals were Hugh Burdit "Bud" Meeks & James Jackson Blackburn.
