Bob, I am also an adoptee born in Brooklyn. The Fifth Avenue Library (with the lion in the front) has all the birth records, if you should choose to go further with your search. My friend found my birth record but the search was extensive.
First, on ancestry I see a slight difference in the month of birth, see:
Robert Kohl, born June 10, 1924 NYC (that includes Kings Co. (Brooklyn).
In 1930 he is living at 304 84 St., Brooklyn.
Robert's wife - Margaret Donnelly 1924-2003 she died in Suffolk Co., on 12-28-2003.
In July 22, 1960 a Robert Kohl is born in Brooklyn - Cert. #30454
In 1993 he was in Centereach, Long Island @ 15 Lehigh Ave, Zip 11720-3606
Bob I just realized a mistake in spelling surname. Let me get back to you.
Liz

Bob, this is Liz again, your search seems to be Long Island, check to see if those towns I wrote about are in Nassau or Suffolk Co., NY.
It seems odd that I couldn't find a WW11 Draft application. That might be of some help. If he was in the military he probably would have been buried at the military cemetery on Long Island.
Another search for you is "Find A Grave" to see where he is buried.

Sorry for the long delay. My dad, Robert H. Kahl, was born on May 10, 1924 and although we do not have his birth certificate I am very sure of the date of birth as it is on his separation of the service papers, marriage certificates and baptism certificate and it is also the date we always celebrated his birthday all of my life. He was adopted by the Kahl family (Henry F. and Bridget (Calbridge) Kahl) in 1924 or early 1925 and they may have lived at 304 84th street in Brooklyn. I know that at least since 1945 they lived at 311 85th street also in Brooklyn (I have stayed at that house several times as a youth). His wife, my mom, was Margaret P. Donnelly and she did pass away in Dec of 2003. We lived in Brooklyn then Queens before moving to Centereach where they raised seven kids, I being the second child born into the family. What I am looking for is the adoption paperwork which so far we have not found and several people from that parish in Brooklyn have told me that it was not uncommon back in the 1920's for the parish priest to hold up a child and ask the parishioners if they could adopt the child. I have reached out to the church in Brooklyn and they stated that they do not have any records from that period.
Thanks for getting back to me and I apologize for the delay in responding.

Hi Bob,

NY State just passed a law allowing adoptees (or a direct descendant if the adoptee is deceased) to obtain their original birth certificates.
It goes into effect January 2020. See NY Adoptee Rights (https://nyadopteerights.org/we-did-it/) for details. I imagine they’ll have details on the process over the next few months.
