My gg father was Hermann Richard Braunschweig, who was probably born in the late 1860s/early 1870s. I have many family photographs and knew my grandfather until his death in 1992, at the age of 97. He was the youngest of 5 children. I also knew my great aunt Martha, who died in the early 80s. The family was from Gera, which is outside of Liepzieg, formerly East Germany. The family immigrated from Germany in 1912, when my grandpa was 17 (he was born in 1895). Are you Jewish? Although they were all protestant Christians, they believe that my great grandfather may have been Jewish, but not necessarily raised as one. He looks very Jewish and was just under 5 ft. tall. When they moved to America, first to Philadelphia, then to San Francisco, my grandpa told us that Jewish immigrants would approach him constantly, thinking he was Jewish. They anglisized their name to Brunswick when they became citizens. I also remember stories my grandfather would tell of his dad's father, whom he never met. He was an alcoholic and would beat the kids. As the story went, his horses knew where to stop (right in front of his favorite bar).
