Hi all,

I requested and received the Death Certificate for my 2nd great grandfather in New York City. Unfortunately, the handwriting is less than ideal. I was hoping someone with knowledge of German given names from the 1800s might be able to help me figure out the two first names for his mother and father. The last names are KOCH.

Hi Ryan,

What year is the certificate?
A few suggestions:
1)look up the family on a census to see if you can come close to the death year.
2)look for all handwriting on it that is the same and try to play a process of elimination with the alphabet. The first letter of the name looks like a "T". Can you send a larger scan across?
3)if this is a child's certificate, the cemetery might have the parent's name.
4)take it to a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to read it...they are a good resource for deciphering terrible handwriting.
5)try for an obit...put the name in quotes followed by the year.
