Looking to go back further than my ggg grandfather, John Quincy Adams. He was born in Virginia in 1809. The 1850 census indicates that he was born Accomack Co, VA, but I have no proof of this.

John Q. married my ggg grandmother Elizabeth Susan Johnson (b. abt. 1820). According to census info, they had the following children together:

1. Virginia (b. 1844)
2. John Quincy (b. Nov. 11, 1846/47 and d. abt. 1925)
3. Elizabeth Susan (b. Mar. 27, 1849 and d. July 18, 1891)
4. Isaac W. (b. 1852)
5. Mary (b. 1856)
6. Thomas Henry (b. Mar. 15, 1867 and d. May 1, 1940)

I am descended from John and Elizabeth's son John. I have the family in Accomack Co., VA until 1860. At that time, they relocated to Nansemond Co, VA. I have the line from 1809 to the present, but would love to track the Adams family from 1809 back.

Any leads will be greatly appreciated!!

I am also a descendent of JQ but I am serching for the people between him and I. My father is dead, and I don't know my grandmother, plus she was an Adams by marriage, so she probably couldn't help. My Dad's name was Charles Ronald Adams. He was born on April 7 in the late 1930's he died on May 3, 2000. He grew up in Michigan, around Jackson I think. Any help would be great.

Suzanne, I think my John Q Adams are unrelated, or perhaps distantly related, to John Quincy Adams, the President. I have not been able to prove any direct relation, in any event. Good luck with your search. Cheryl

From the looks of what you have I think I can make things easier. President John Adams was really John A. the II, but that was not the fashion back then. So:
John Adams
Pr. John Adams 1735-1826
Pr. John Quincy Adams 1767-1848
John Q Adams 1809- there was no need to denote him as the II because the word President differentiated him from his father. Also they may have named him exactly the same name at the time that the original record was being made.
John Q Adams II 1852
John Q Adams III 1878

Now the ancestors of Presidents are well documented and with John Adams#2 The Daughters of the American Revolution might help. I just don't know how to get from John QIII to my dad This should not be too hard as it is only two men between them and my Dad.

I found him on one of the US Censuses for Accomack Co. There was also a John Quincy Adams born in Somerset Co MD next door (or if not, try Worcester Co MD). I find a lot by going to, then selecting Ancestor Hunt, then Mormon Church records, and searching in 20-40 year time blocks - gives you a skeleton to work in and at times even all of the birth and death, spousal and family member information. Much is from the old bibles. You still need to work on confirming what you find but it gets you a bit of a jump start on the process. Also, if you go to Roots.web, click onto World Connect, enter the name Gazelle Thornton, you will get only 2 results. Click onto far right hand side ID and it will take you to either of the 2 Accomack/Northampton Co VA websites with family genealogical information. Go to index, find your surname and sharpen your pencil.
