Trying to find Merritt's parents. He was born about 1840 -42 probably in Windsor, Broome County NY. I can't find much on him but here's what I do have.

1850 - living with Sylvester and Emeline Barns in Conklin NY.

1855 NYS census - living with Daniel and Amelia Blatchley in Windsor. He and his siblings, Mary age 11 and Charles age 9 are listed as stepchildren.

1880 - Married to Ida Bills and living in Susquehanna Cnty Pennsylvania.

Logic would tell me that Amelia Blatchley is remarried and is his mother but I cannot find her on the 1850 or 1860 census.

I would love to find him in 1860 or 1870 and also when he died and where he's buried.

If anyone can help I sure would appreciate it!

Lynn

Emeline in the 1850 could be the same person as Amelia in the 1860. The names do sound similar.

I had thought of that too. The ages are about right to make it a possiblity. In 1850 Emaline is 32 and in 1855 Amelia is 35.

I found a Nov 27, 1844 Mortgage Sale notice. Joseph A. and Amelia (his wife) Goodell defaulted on an 1840 loan and their property in Windsor, Broome County was put up for auction on Jan 30, 1845.

Possibly the parents of Merritt?

If you have trouble finding it I can email it to you.

Attached is a small excerpt from it. I see that in the 1850 US census for Broome county there is 60 year old Garnsey & Dicintha Goodell, I wonder if they were Joseph Goodell's parents.

I did search that site and came up with nothing! How did you find it? If you could send it to me I would very much appreciate it. Gurney_lynn@yahoo.com

This sounds very promising. Thank you.

I also noticed Garnsey (it might really be Guernsey) and Dicintha on that census....there were quite a few Goodell's in Windsor during that time period but there might be a connection.

Actually, looking again at Garnsey in 1850, they have
Charley E. aged 4 living with them. This could be the same Charles E. in the 1855 census. The age is just right.

I just emailed that 1844 mortgage sale notice to you.

Yes.. I saw that young Charles E. Goodell and thought it could be Merritt's brother. I wonder if the woman Matilda above his entry was really Amelia, age is a bit off, though.

Good luck.
