I am trying to find out what county Shake Rag is in. My mother grew up in this town circa 1930-1935. My grandmother, Bessie who went by any one of the names above died in this town. We are desperately searching for her death certificate as we don't know what county it would have been in and we don't have any information on her.
All I can remember as a little girl hearing my mother and her aunt's talk about how dark it was in Shake Rag. My mother also said there was a store and a school house (which her family moved into after they closed the school) and a post office (she's not too sure about the Post Office)

My mother's father's name is Troy Johnson which is all we know about him and her siser's father's name is Dode Turntine, and that's all we know about him.

My grandmother's sisters and brother (all deceased) were:

Mary Jane
Edna Mae

I have information on Shake Rag. It was in northern Lee Co., NC and is now called Osgood. It was incorporated (Shake Rag) in 1889; charter repealed in 1891. Traditionally known as Shake Rag because two prominent citizens fought until their clothes were torn off.

I live in Lee County and will be at the courthouse looking for my family's genealogy and will check some of your names as I have time.

Hope this helps.

Tom, I'm glad you explained that. I'd never heard that story before or heard the Osgood area called by that name before.
