Orphanages in Hawaii late 19th, early 20th century

Both of my grandparents and their siblings were given over to an orphanage somewhere in Hawaii, probably late 19th century. My grandparents met there. Both of their mothers had lost their husbands and could not care for their large families until they remarried. My grandparents were Portuguese/Norwegian (grandmother) and German (grandfather). I only know their names and have nothing on their parents - the last names of my grandparents were Halverson and Klemm. I am mostly trying to search out the Portuguese side of the family right now.

I’m writing on behalf of my friend, Dee, who was adopted in Honolulu. She was able to access her birth file a few months ago. Although no father is listed for her, it mentions 2-3 siblings that “were placed” prior to her adoption. We have been unable to determine the complete names of these siblings. I and my sister are doing genealogical research for Dee and general history on Hawaii. We are now looking into finding information on orphanages in Honolulu between 1940-1955. I ran across this message board dates 2011 which mentioned Sue Brimeyer had a book on St. Mary’s orphanage. It was also mentioned in this thread that someone’s mom was there for most of her youth. What we do know is Dee’s Mother was listed as Helen Mary Gilbert at the time of her birth in 1951. We have discovered Helen Mary had a son in 1942 with the last name Ermitano (a filipino), two sons were also named In her obituary as Billy D Halemano and Raymond B Halemano unknown birth dates. Perhaps all are still alive? Helen had sisters named Ellen Akana Drewes, a sister named Rose Mary Akana or Rosemary and a brother named Charles Akana. Other surnames of Dee’s siblings maybe Gilbert, Meredith, or Lundquist, or Halemano. Any information that you would or could shed light on would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Dee is having significant undiagnosed health issues and feels her time is running out on any chances of meeting any biological relatives. Thank you for your time.

I'm very sorry, but I am sure that we are not related in any way. My grandparents were put in an orphanage in the very late 19th/early 20th century. Their last names were Klemm and Halverson. My grandfathers parents sailed into Honolulu Harbor in the late 1800's and he was born aboard ship. He was German. My grandmother was born somewhere in the islands and her parents were Norwegian and Portuguese. My grandparents married in Honolulu and by the 1920's were living in California. So I'm afraid our ethnic backgrounds and names and time lines don't match up in any way. I wish you the best in your search. I know how frustrating it is.
