I am seeking information on the McElhoes. My greatgrandmother was Mary Ellen McElhoes who married Cornelius Smith. Mary Ellen's mother's maiden name was Nancy (Bell ?). They lived in Johnson County, Arkansas in the mid 1800s. Any information is appreciated.

To Joyce Nigh: Hi Joyce. Just saw your message on the GenForum board 6/16/2000. In researching our own McElhose family some 20 odd years ago, I wrote letters to every living McElhose/McElhoe, etc. I could find. Got a letter from a Dixie Parish who would have been a great niece I think of your Mary Ellen (she called her Mollie). Also, Turned up a great McElhoe family tree written by a James de Long, descendant, who shows the following: John McElhose b. 1787 (prob. in Pa.) married Anna Green, b. 1782 Kentucky. Their children were David Amer b. 1818 and Stafford Smith, b. 1813. Stafford Smith married Nancy ( ) probably your Nancy Bell. Their children were: Rebecca, Elijah, Minerva, John James,"Molly" (probably your Mary Ellen), Samuel Lafayette, Douglas and Matilda. The above mentioned Molly lived in Harrison, Arkansas, as did her brother Douglas.
Also, if you're interested in the Scottish Clan the McElhose/McElhoe/McElhoes/McHose families derive from, check out the McTavish Clan home page at We belonged to that clan as far back as the 1100's on Kintyre in Scotland, and were absorbed by the Campbells after the Highland Clearances. The MacTavish chieftainship was dormant for a couple hundred years, but recently regained its status. This is an extremely interesting site.
My e-mail address is I'd love to hear from any and all of the McElhose/McElhoe/McElhoes/McLehose/McHose gang.
Happy hunting. Marge McElhose

My Great Great Grandfather was John McElhose who was born in 1809. He first married Nancy Ballantine who died giving born to their 5th child, Nancy. Then he married Sarah Ballantine, Nancy's sister. John and Sarah had 14 children. I have a list of all their birth dates but have lost track of many of them. Most of the family seems to have settled in the Morgan Co, OH area for a time, before and during the Civil War. The three oldest sons served in the Union Army. Some moved west to WI and IA.
I have very little information on John's ancestry except found with the list of children and their birthdays was another list of birthdays. The second list contains the birthdays of Isaac, Dorcas, James and Susannah McElhoes and documents their marriages to Isabel Kinter, William Houk etc. So there has to be some connection. Does anyone know.

Tom Knapp - I have some information which may help you fill in that second list of names and dates you mentioned in your reply to Joyce.
My great, great, grandfather's name was Isaiah, not Isaac and he married Isabella Kinter. His sister, Dorcas, married first Henry Kinter, then William Houck. Another sister, Susan (Susannah?), married Johnson Lightcap and a third sister, Nancy, married William Dilte.
I have no dates or places of the marriages or where they took up residence afterwards but I would be interested in having this information.

Dear Jennifer, How nice to hear from you. Another McElhose family I was not aware of! The internet will yet bring all of us together. Isn't it great! My husband's name was Robert A. McElhose, my sons are Robert L., Donald A. and Richard S. McElhose. I also have 11 McElhose grandkids, 9 of whom are boys so will carry the name. My family is all from Seattle. My husband's father was Earl R. from Wisconsin, to Seattle, and Earl's father was Robert Densmore McElhose, born Illinois, lived in Wisconsin until ca 1910 then settled in Seattle and later California. I'd love to hear more about your family and the line you are from. Any relation to Sam McElhose? John and Nancy or Sarah Ballantine McElhose? please feel free to e-mail me. Marge
