My grandfather, John Ralph Harwell, was born in Greenville, Butler Co., Alabama on 12/27/1898 or 98. His father was Webster Levi Harwell also born in Butler Co., AL. We think that his birthdate was 12/31/1867. My uncle John Ralph Harwell, Jr. has found an 1860 census with an S. Harwell 48 years old living in Salseda, AL. I am trying to find the name of my great-grandfather and any other information about the Harwell's in Alabama. We think that 2 Harwell brothers moved from Virginia in the 1600's and that we might be related to them. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am new to this and am not quite sure how to go about this type of research. Thank you.

Ishmuel was probably the son of Sterling Harwell (1734 - 1806) from Virginia then to Halifax County N. C..Several of his children, Ishmuel and Sarah and I think his wife Mary moved to Alabama as early as 1815.

Sterling's father was Mark (1706 - 1785)and I think Mark's father was Samuel (1664 - 1767)

Any chance you might know of a Mary B. Harwell, b. 1812, d. 1873 in Tuskegee AL? A "Mrs. Mary B. Jones" married my GGGGF Elam Fitzpatrick, but books on the Fitzpatrick family call her " Mary Harwell", so I think this could have been her maiden name. Joneses and Harwells both married into the Fitzpatrick family, and both lived in VA, GA, & AL where they all went. I just can't face the idea of the "Jones" message board! Any insight would be deeply appreciated!

Surnames: Harwell, Fiers, Fires
Do you have information about Sterling Harwell and his father, Mark, while they were living in Sussex Co., VA? My William Fiers (sometimes Fires) was Sterling Harwell's overseer in 1784. I'd like to learn more about the Sussex Co. line.

THis must be Ishamel S. Harwell in the 1850 Census for Marengo County. He was 21 at the time and the only person of Harwell name listed.
