Does anyone recognise the man in this photo?
I know him only as Wilfred. He was a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm stationed near London in WW2. He apparently was shot down during the war. He may have had Polish ancestry.
It's a long shot I know

There are over 6000 men with the first name of Wilfred listed as casualties from the Royal Navy alone. Do you have a date when he was lost or any other information at all?

To help you a bit, here's a listing of missing/KIA Fleet Air Arm enlisted and officers named Wilfred.

Thank you for your reply. We believe him to be my father's father. If that is the case he was still alive before July 1941, and possibly died before 1943.
We were told he was a Polish airman stationed in the Fleet Air Arm. Do you know of any lists that mention the Polish airman? I know there were a lot, and Wilfred doesn't sound Polish.

You're correct in Wilfred doesn't sound Polish. Maybe it was a nickname (which is likely) or he was english with polish ancestry? I didn't find any polish sounding surnames in the Fleet Air Arm losses for flying crew named Wilfred. The RAF losses also don't seem to have a match.

I searched the 1940-1947 Polish Air Force lists for a Wilfred and had no luck either.

And here is every Wilfred there is in the various databases for RAF, Bomber Command and Fleet Air Arm.

Without more information it's very difficult to proceed. Here's a link to some information on the Polish aircrew in Britain if he was indeed polish. Is there any birth information listed anywhere?

Thank you so much for all this information. I really appreciate the time you took to gather it all.
It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack at times!
Many thanks again.
