U. S. City Directories (1821-1989) Beta OCR misreads Addresses

I have really enjoyed the new US city directories collection. It is as advertised better than the previous city directory collection. However I find continuous errors caused by the OCR process in reading addresses. The process seems to conflate addresses and occupations in numerous cases. For example, consider this case:

[Hard copy directory and image]
Public, John Q barber r1100 Maple Ave

[ record produced by OCR]
Public, John Q Barber
Street address: 00 Maple Ave.

I have "corrected" numerous of these types of errors so that searching will yield more accurate results.

A lesson here for researchers is always look at the image. I know is seeking to improve the OCR process along with other issues in this very useful database. I just hope it's sooner rather than later

yup been there done that. got tired of correcting and quit and that was just names.. no ability to add missing names or blocks of names I have found as well

The format is difficult for any OCR to adjust to and it can be slightly different from book to book..

posted 3 complaints Apr-May scroll down Directories category.

I own OmniPage Pro which can be trained to expect a format if you know what you are doing.. not sure what Acom uses..
