Looking for any information on the origin of the surname Voronyak. My GGF emmigrated from what is now Puste Cemerne, Slovakia in 1898. There are still relatives living in Slovakia. I know there is a small village in the Ukraine near Lviv that is called Voronyaki. I would like to find out if my ancesters origianlly emmigrated from the Ukraine. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Name Voronyak is common among Slovenian people. It might have nothing to do with the name of that village. Name comes from the bird's name "vorona", or crow.

Anyway, this name could also mean "person with dark shiny hair" or with dark complexion.

Some Ancient History
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://http://www.zakarpattja.w...

The present Puste Cemerne, SK went by following names :
Mark-Csemernye, Postj Cz'emerne, Mark-Cschemernye, Mark-Csemernye, Cz'emerne, Markcsemernye.

The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) website has Greek Catholic church records for Puste Cemerne. My GUESS is the your Voronyaks were Hutsul???

There are appx 6+ Ukrainian villages w/same name Vorona (crow) or Vorony (crows).
Vorona/Vorony are also popular village names in Belarus & Russia. Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovakia etc also use the name, but it appears as spelling variant, Vrona/y, Vrene/y etc.

I am guessing that you are not likely to be active on here any more, but I thought I would add this piece of information I just discovered for others like me who have been searching.

My great grandmother's surname was also Voronyak, she was born to a Father who I could not trace, and a mother that had a Slovakian name with German-named ancestors. Her father was untraceable beyond her birth certificate, her birth located in Trebisov in Slovakia.

Just recently I discovered that for political reasons (still unknown), her father changed his name to Voronyak from the Polish surname Wronski. He also changed his first name from an unknown name to Ludovit/Lajos, the Slovakian version of the name Louis.

Hope this information might help others that are searching.
