Hi Jeff,
My great-grandmother was Cammie Whitesell, from Ohio, married a Cash, moved to Virginia. I know nothing about this family but would like to learn more. Have a bond with this ancestor as other family members say I resemble her. Your other spelling of this name I found most intriguing because about 20 years ago, when I was a college student and first heard the name Whitesell as it related to my family, I speculated it might have had this German spelling. So when I saw your post I had to respond! Is the family indeed of German extraction? What else is known about the background of this family. Thanks for any advice!

This part of the Weitzel family is from Germany. My Gggg gradfather came from Gremany to Holland to America in the mid 1700's. They moved through the east to Indaina. Some were in Ohio but I do not have a record of a Cammie Whitesell. That does not mean that Cammie is not related. If you had a little more on the Whitesell side, I could see if we are connected. Happy hunting. Jeff

Thanks, Jeff! I'm almost positive I can find Cammie's father's name and possibly her mothers, as well as what area in Ohio they were from...just got to make a few phone calls! Will let you know. Thanks again!

I, too, am related to the wietzel (Johann Paul Wietzel) who came from the village of Ober Ingleheim in Germany. I recently had the privilege of visiting this village about 3 years ago. I met a Helmut Weitzel there who was in his 70s. He lives in a house inside a castle over a thousand years old. I was told that the Weitzels there were from nobility or knights. There were several Weitzels buried inside the castle, and only nobility or knights were allowed that privilege.

The Johann Paul Weitzel who came to PA arrived in 1742, before USA existed. I am related to the Weitzel who went to Virginia (Rockingham County). The Weitzel name was changed to the Anglo spelling of Whitesell in Shanandoa Court House sometime before the Civil War. During the Civil War, my relative left Virginia and fled to first Indiana and then Missouri. His name was John Jefferson Whitesell, DOB 07/23/1830, and died 02/15/1893 and is buried at Whitehall Cemetery near Jericho Springs, Missouri.

I am very much interested in any information about John Jefferson Whitesell's father. His name may have been Peter and would have been born around 1810. He probably lived and died in Rockingham Co VA.
