Mary CHANNELL, b. 17 Oct, 1808, Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio ( I have three sources that state she was born in Ohio – 1880 US Census (her children state that she was born in Ohio); LDS Microfilm US/CAN, #1020763 re Thomas Van Scoy. One of the Histories, History of Oregon by Hines, 1893, p. 487, mentioned in the microfilm states that she was born in Zanesville, Ohio; American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) re Mary states that she was born in Ohio. It is possible that when Ohio became a state in 1803, Samuel Channell and Sarah Elizabeth Hornbeck went to Ohio to acquire land being offered (usually the terms of acquiring the land were that the purchaser develop the land and settle on the land for five years). When the five years were up in 1808 and after Mary had been born, Samuel and Sarah sold the land and returned to Virginia. There were many Channell/Channel families in Ohio. Perhaps one of the families induced Samuel and Sarah to come to Ohio and acquire the land. There are few early birth records in the state of Ohio, and census records would be of no help either. Mary died 17 Mar 1878, New Virginia, Warren, Iowa, buried in New Virginia, Warren, Iowa.
