Some of my ancestors are Black Norwegians. They are a group of people who came to America obviously from Norway, but they had strikingly dark skin and peculiar facial features unlike anyone from the caucazoid race. They appear to be native americans. In fact, they were not served drinks in bars in wisconsin because every bartender believed them to be native americans. Has anyone else heard of the black norwegians?

My mother was 1/2 Norwegian, with Native American, English, and French on the other half. She said the black Norwegians were people descended from Etruscans who sailed the western coasts of Europe and presumably settled and/or intermarried with Norwegians and also Irish. There is a term for the Irish as well: "Black Irish."
My Mother was one of six children. Two of these could have been pure native american, one was very blond, and the others were in between.
I suspect my mother's explanation simplified a complex histrory of exploration and mingling over many generations up and down the Atlantic coast.

My paternal grandmother, who looked like an American Indian, claimed to be Black Norwegian. I know that her family did come from Norway, but when I had my DNA tested it came out 93% European and 7% Native American. I have not yet figured out just what that indicates. Her maiden name was Roe and her mother's maiden name was Mucklebust.

I am Black Norwegian. I don't know any of my reletives past my father and mother and my paternal grandmother. All three have passed away. It's very lonley not having any family members. My mother was german decent. My father is Black Norwiegian. I never heard of anyone else being Black Norwiegian. I was told years ago, that I dosn't matter what race I am and it shouldn't matter to anyone else.
I have inbetween hair texture, olive skin and green eyes. People think I'm haspanic or Italian, creole. I hear it all. I have experienced more racism from the white race then any race growing up, it was very lonley growing up to be singled out.

A Saami family of reindeer herders, on the Kola Peninsula, ca 1910 . The mild climate, rich nickel deposits, and strategic location of the Kola peninsula attracted the attention of the new Soviet government. Settlers began moving north in the 1920s and collectivization of reindeer herds began before World War II. The current Saami population in Russia is around 2000, largely concentrated in the village of Lovozero. Photo credit: Lovozero Museum

I've heard of Dark Danes, Black Irish and Black Swedes, so there's got to be Black Norwegians. One family friend, born in Duluth of Swedish descent is very dark: black hair, brown eyes, but with a very round face, moderately high cheek bones, and when the summer came, tanned very, very dark. She gave one the impression that she was part Spanish or Native American.

I wonder if it is the migration and mixing of culture from Spain, Portugal and even North Africa. The Vikings and Moors were known to have contacted one another over centuries.

I am of Norwegian Descent on my birthmother's side, but through DNA testing, found that I'm related to most of Europe, with sizable matches to Iberians and Moroccans. I have dark brown hair, brown eyes and moderately olive skin. I reflect centuries of movement and meanderings in my history. Something to be proud of. I think it is interesting.

"I was told years ago, that I dosn't matter what race I am and it shouldn't matter to anyone else."

I agree with this statement. Recent DNA evidence has proved that all humans are descended from Africans, consequently there is no such thing as a "pure race". The physiological features found in populations around the world merely became dominant over time as people with the same genes bred with each other. There can often be great genetic variations between people in different parts of the same country, even if they all speak the same language and unite under one flag.

I am half Black Norwegian and trust me, its not a Native American Scandinavian hybrid. My Grandmother tells me that black Norwiegians are a mix of Mongolian and Norwiegian, a fact suported by the fact that both my mother and I have unusally dark skin for Scandinavians. Also, when my sister was born, she came out looking suspisiously oriantal.

Black Norwegians are generally believed to be of Gypsy or Roma origins. Roma or Gypsies are originally from India. They are called Kale (Black) in Finland and Norway. Many came to Europe from Northern India (Rajasthan/Punjab) in the 13th and 14th centuries to escape muslim invaders. Due to their dark complexions they were mistaken for Egyptians, hence Gypsy. Linguistic and genetic research proves them to be of Indian origin. More than 50% of Roma people in Europe and other parts of the world carry Y chromosomes and other genetic markers, common to the Indian sub continent. My friend says that some of her family got called Black Norwegians......I let her know about Roma origins of Black Norwegians and she was very happy to hear that as a reasonable explanation.

My grandpa was black Norwegian but family has never said where the "black" nationality came from. Some of my family is dark and some look Asian. Recently, I read the novel Viking Saga. It's a saga handed down generation to generation, so I'm not sure if it's true even though it says it is true. In the saga it says that a Nubian woman named Aasa came to Norway and that's how it started...?
