Searching for ancestors/descendants of Mentzer and Stonebraker families who were found in the 1850 census in Allen County, Indiana in Wayne Twp and Pleasant Twp. My great great grandmother Frances Mentzer born ca 1830 in VA (now West VA) married William Isiah Stonebraker who was born in IN ca 1830. I don't know who either of their parents were. The family moved on to Oregon ca 1860's.

Candace, you and I share the same great-grandfather. William Jerome Stonebraker was my great grandfather, born at the site of present-day Pendleton in 1861. You may have talked once with my cousin Lorna Hayes who lives in Salem, Or. She told me you lived in Albany, Or., but I haven't been able to make the right connection or trip to become acquainted with you. I have one great problem: I can't learn anything about siblings or parents of either William Isaiah Stonebraker or Frances Mentzer. I'll pass your query on to Elizabeth Butzer, who also shares William Isaiah as a great-grandfather. One person e-mailed me with info she thought William Isaiah was born to the second wife of a man named George McKenz(s)ie. This person said McKenzie's first family didn't want second wife, Elizabeth Stonebraker's children to bear McKenzie name. Elizabeth Stonebraker would be German line which goes back many many moons. My information from family sources is that William Isaiah's line is Scotch and he wrote well in Gaelic and corresponded with siblings in midwest. Even people who may know for sure where William Isaiah is buried are dead now. He is buried in Eastern Oregon, possibly unmarked grave at Pilot Rock, or on corner of son William Jerome's old homestead. Would appreciate knowing anything more that you know of William Isaiah. Take care and God bless. Wm. C. Jerome Stonebraker

I have a picture of the Stonebraker family. They lived near our family in Pilot Rock. I did not know them personally as I was too young at the time. My older brother may remember something.

Thank you for your information. Frances Mentzer in our records was William Isaiah Stonebraker's wife and mother of William Jerome Stonebraker, my grandfather. We can't track the parents, grandparents, etc. of either Frances Mentzer or William Isaiah Stonebraker. We'd like to know more about them if we can. So if your brother can provide information, we'd sure love to have it. My home address is Wm. C. Jerome Stonebraker, 2065 Everett St., North Bend, Or., 97459 if he or you would care to send information some other way than internet.

My grandfather, William Jerome, had a ranch at the head of McKay Creek/now reservoir. He was close to Atkinson's place. William Jerome had lots of dealings in Pilot Rock as well as Pendleton, and was well known in Ukiah. He reportedly scouted for Gen. Crook when they had the Indian fight at Battle Mountain.

Family information is that William Isaiah lived on a corner of William Jerome's ranch when he was in late years, and that he might be buried on part of that ranch or in unmarked grave at Pilot Rock Cemetery. We've been to Pilot Rock and Pendleton, but old land records, etc. have burned in fires, so we were told, leaving no information.

We were told Frances went to live with a daughter in her later years, but not which one, or in which city, possibly Weston. We don't know where she died or is buried, either.

So if your brother has information we'd sure be happy to receive it. Thank you, Wm. C. Jerome Stonebraker

Surnames: Stonebraker, Mentzer
I have changed email addresses several times and just today found your reply to my posting several years ago about the Stonebraker and Mentzer families who lived in the Pilot Rock area of Umatilla County, Oregon.

I still have not learned who the parents were of Isaiah Stonebraker and Frances Mentzer, have you? The information about the possible McKenzie family connection was interesting. I had not heard about it. Have you been able to learn anything further about that? I still wonder if Frances Mentzer Stonebraker was related in some way to the other Mentzer family who went to Umatilla County, Area after 1900, but have not been able to solve that puzzle or question yet.

I have not heard from Lorna Hays for several years now. I recently learned that her husband passed away about a year ago or so. I plan to try to contact her this week if she still lives at the same place in west Salem.

My new email address is
