Hi Tracy:

How you located any information on your John Duncan?

Hi Bill:

I am related to Duncans and Moreheads as well. I'm not sure sure where the John Duncan fits in, but let me know if you find anything. I have a database full of Duncans from Henderson, Union, and Webster Co., KY. I descend from Nathaniel Duncan (b. 1760/1768 VA). He came to Henderson Co., KY from Caswell Co., NC. See my posting of Tracy for John's descendants from my research. Please let me know if you see anything wrong!

Also, do you have information on Elias Morehead? I have him as the son of Elias and Sarah (Fortune) Morehead. It is beleived that Elias Sr was the brother of my Enoch Morehead of Union and Webster Co., KY. I have a photocopy of The Saga of Southern Illinois quarterly Fall 1998 issue which lists Elias and Sarah's birth and death and all their children's births and a few deaths from a bible record. I can scan and send to you if you do not have.

I have just located another Elias and Sarah descendant in Washington that descends from Mary P. Morehead and William M. Duncan, son of Elijah Duncan. I beleive this Elijah is a son of my Nathaniel; if not a son, probably a nephew.

I don't have much on your Nathan T. Duncan yet, but this line seems related to my line of Duncans. I am a researcher in Lexington, KY and central KY. My fifth great grandmother, Elizabeth Buntin Ray McGary, came with Daniel Boone & Hugh McGary in 1775 to KY from North Carolina's Yadkin valley - and she is listed as being one of the first four mothers to settle in the wilderness area. Her son, General James Ray's daughter married Martin C. Duncan in 1802 at Harrodsburg. He was from Caswell/Person County area of North Carolina. Martins C.'s mother was Mary (unknown) and his father was Daniel Duncan, who may be the son of David "Surry" Duncan who left a will in VA in 1745. Daniel's oldest son was a Nathaniel Duncan. Of the five sons in this family, many named sons Nathaniel Duncan. My Martin C. Duncan had a brother or half brother named Nathaniel Duncan. This Nathaniel also had a son named Nathan. Both of them migrated to the Henderson County area of KY, which included Webster County early on.

I found this link on the internet and visted the site of my Martin C. Duncan brother's grave last year. This place has been forgotten about for years. Most of these folks have North Carolina roots.
From Mary Ann Dobson & DSA files:

Nathaniel Duncan b. circa 1770 m.Jane Rainey in Caswell Co. NC; their son:

Nathan Benjamin (s/o Nathaniel) b. abt 1793, mar. 1st Elizabeth Humphrey b. 1794 (dau. of William Humphrey and Mary Polly Holloway); mar. 2nd Martha Tyree b. abt 1809 in NC or VA; divorced her and allegedly ran off to parts unknown with her sister Mary Tyree. Daughter of Nathan Benjamin Duncan and Martha Tyree:

Elizabeth Ann Duncan who mar. John Thomas Hearin or Hearon.

Information from another researcher (MAD: name not given): "Nathan Benjamin Duncan and Martha Tyree Duncan were divorced. There is several documents which state that Nathan ran off with Martha's sister, Mary Tyree. There were affidavits stating that no one knew where they ran off to. He was presumed dead in 1849 when his land was sold and the money was divided between all his children and Martha Duncan."

Nathan Duncan Jr. appears on the Henderson Co. KY tax lists of 1835, pg.10; 1836, pg.10; 1837, pg.11; 1839, pg.13. There are compiled family group sheets of Nathaniel Benjamin Duncan Jr. by Nancy Robinson of Seattle, WA, 1991; Annabelle Gibson Nosler of Sacramento, CA, 1990; and Helen Faith of Owensboro, KY, 1991.

see also "Brief Duncan Data" from the DSA newsletter Vol.5#4 1997.

Information from Mary (last name not given) <> by email 9/1999 to Carole Marcum (from Carole 9/10/1999):

Nathaniel Benjaman Duncan, Born 1760 ‑ 1768 ????? possibly Virginia; Married Jane Rainey, 11/6/1782 Caswell Co., North Carolina; Died about 1846 Henderson Co., Kentucky; (father may have been Daniel Duncan and mother's name may have been Mary); Jane Rainey, Born about 1761 North Carolina ??? (parents were John Rainey & Elizabeth). Their Children:

Susan Duncan, Born 1/18/1791 Caswell Co., North Carolina; Married Berryman Gibson; Died 2/2/1865 Henderson Co., Kentucky

Nathaniel Benjaman Duncan II, Born about 1793 Caswell Co., North Carolina; Married (1st) Elizabeth Humphreys; Married (2nd) Martha Tyree; Died after 1840.

Elijah Duncan, Born about 1791 Caswell Co., North Carolina; Married Jane Humphrey (s) ????; Died About 1869 Webster Co., Kentucky (not sure about this one, but feel he is got to be a relative).

Nancy Duncan, Born about 1802; Died 5/10/1834 Henderson Co., Kentucky.

(MAD: no evidence for a middle name for the earliest Nathaniel Duncan)

Inquiry by Rose Hollingsworth :

I would like to contact Don Theye. I have a copy of an email you sent to the Duncan list; but I do not have your email address. Would love to exchange information. (MAD: Elijah Duncan of Caswell Co. NC to Smith & DeKalb Co. TN)

Are there any other Duncan's researching my Caswell and Kentucky Duncans? Would love to here from you! I have a Duncan that was from Caswell Co., NC as well. He is listed below:

Nathaniel Duncan, born 1760‑1768 Virginia, died about 1846 Corydon, Henderson Co., KY, married Jane Rainey 06 Nov 1782 Caswell Co., NC. Children:

Nathan Benjamin Duncan [proven to be son of Nathaniel]; born abt 1793 probably Caswell Co., NC; died after 1840 whereabouts unknown; married 1) Elizabeth Humphrey 05 Sep 1818 Caswell Co., NC; married 2) Martha Tyree 02 Mar 1827 Caswell Co., NC

Possible other children not yet proven:

Susan Duncan; born 18 Jan 1791 Caswell Co., NC; died 02 Feb 1865 Henderson Co., KY; married Berryman Gibson about 1809

Elijah Duncan; born abt 1791 NC; died 1869 Webster Co., KY; married 1) Unknown; married 2) Jane Umphras [prob Humphrey] 05 Nov 1835 Henderson Co., KY

Nancy Duncan; born abt 1802; married Charles W. Stone 10 May 1834 Henderson Co., KY

The parentage of Nathaniel Duncan is somewhat uncertain. The below family may be that of my Nathaniel; I am not yet convinced. Nathaniel did not follow the usual system of naming his children after his father or brothers; then again, he may have had other children that stayed behind or died young.

Daniel Duncan; died 1779/1781 Caswell Co., NC; married Mary. Mary left a will 1782 Person Co., NC [at one time part of Caswell Co]. She mentions the following children: Nathaniel; Nancy Merritt; Frances Madding; Mary "Polly" Ragsdale; Sally; Martin C.; Elizabeth; Abner; Patience Wilkerson. This Daniel may even be an older brother to Nathaniel. I also wonder if Elijah could be an older brother as well.

There was an Elijah [mentioned above] which moved to Henderson Co., KY along with Nathaniel. Elijah named one of his sons Absalom Richard [he went by both names]. Don's Elijah had a son Richard also. Too many similarities in these Duncan families; surely there is a connection somewhere!

Don, I am very curious to see your family group charts and references. Please email me! Thanks, Rose Hollingsworth

Inquiry by Rose Hollingsworth, posted on mailing list 5/14/2000, and later correspondence:

Her Nathan Benjamin Duncan was married first to Elizabeth Humphreys and were probably divorced in Caswell Co., NC since he married my ancestor Martha Tyree there. Elizabeth (Humphreys) Duncan died in Henderson Co., KY. Nathan and Martha were divorced in Henderson Co., KY.

I have copies of Nathan and Martha's divorce affidavids [Henderson Co., KY] which are from several Duncans but no relationship are stated. I'm hoping to find Nathan and Elizabeth's divorce documents in Caswell Co; hoping their affidavids will list relationships!

MAD: sent her info about Carole Marcum, extracts from my files, and after she sent her address, sent her my files in Henderson and Webster and Union Co. KY, Caswell and Person Co. NC, and Surry/Sussex Co. VA; asked if she could help Tracy S. Kelley <> who is looking for a John Duncan b.1808, mar. Nancy Smith, to TN? then to Henderson, Webster, Union Co. KY area.

Correction - In last post I stated that Nathaniel was the oldest son of Daniel Duncan. In this context I meant he was the oldest son of David "Surry" Duncan. Daniel Duncan also had a Nathaniel Duncan (and he may have been his oldest son also)- the one who migrated to Henderson County Kentucky. We do not know how many sons Daniel Duncan had, as no will has been found. His wife Mary (unknown) Duncan's will named three males, Nathaniel Duncan, Martin Duncan, and Abner Duncan, and four female daughters - but states she has six children?

David, Thank you for all of this wonderful information. Nathan T. Duncan is my daughter's mother-in-law's great grandfather and she is trying to gather information about him and his ancestors. Her grandmother was a child of Nathan T. and second wife (she thinks her name was Georgia or Georgiann Reynolds). On her grandmother's death certificate it only states her mothers last name as Reynolds. I do have the census information for Nathan and first wife Minerva and children in 1860 and 1870 but cannot find him again until the 1910, age 77, census in Crittenden Cty, KY living with his daughter Rosa and family. I have not found any information regarding Nathan's second wife. It does look like Nathan is connected to your family and I will continue to look and notify you if I come across anything. Again thank you for taking the time to send me this information it is greatly appreciated. I hope to hear from you if you find out anything new in your research.
Thank you, Kathy Alexander

Hi Kathryn:

The Nathaniel Duncan that married Jane Rainey appears to have moved to Wilkes Co., GA and not to Kentucky. There is a Nathaniel, wife Jane, and son Rainey in Wilkes Co., GA in the early 1800s. I really think that our Nathaniel is actually the Nathaniel that is the son of Nathaniel who was the son of David. Have absolutely no proof though! I have not found anyone claiming him. But David Duncan had several sons and each one of them could have named a son Nathaniel! Could get really messy!!!

This is what I located today on Nathaniel T. Duncan…

N. T. Duncan died 09 Oct 1911, Crittenden Co., KY. His age is listed as 76 and he was a widow. There are no parents listed or place of births. No birth date or place of birth for Nathaniel. There is also no informant or place of burial. He died from a Cerebral Hemorrhage with Malarial Fever as the contributory factor. Since there is no burial place, I wonder if he was buried elsewhere. I sure was hoping to find information on his parents, Elijah Duncan and whomever he married first time around. Do you have much on Elijah?

I really do not know for certain if Elijah is the son of my Nathaniel Duncan. Have found no proof but his son is listed in an Affidavid I have on Nathan and Martha Duncan’s divorce (this Nathan is my ancestor and son of Nathaniel). It would make sense that his cousin would defend him. I will send you what I have recorded on Elijah.

According to the book, Some Marriages in Webster County, Kentucky and Related Notes, compiled by Shirley C. Moody, Evansville, IN 2000, Nathaniel married a Georgella Reynolds on 17 March 1883; he was listed as N. T. Duncan. Unfortunately, I did not write down the Book or Page number. I do believe I have a copy of the microfilm Index of Marriages for all the Duncan for Webster Co. Will check for you. There was also another possible marriage: N.T. Duncan to Maggie Goodwin 08 Aug 1899.

The only reference to Nathaniel in Crittenden was on marriage records listing him as Rev. N.T. Duncan. Do not know for certain if this is the same N. T. as yours.

Would you send me a listing of all his children and their marriages? I have several children listed and wonder how many more he had. I’ll send you what I have on Nathaniel T. Duncan as well.

Hope to hear from you soon!
