I have a John Hickman born ca 1720, he married Ann Wingate ca 1745,New Hanover co,NC
I think her father was Edward Wingate, mother Anne Blount.
I believe they had two children Edward and John Hickman.
Is it a possibility that John Hickman and Ann Wingate could be the parents of Samuel Hickman born ca 1744/45 maybe New Hanover, Bladen county NC, later Brunswick co NC, some say Samuel Hickman married Margaret Milliken?
Is some researching John and Ann Wingate?
Thanks

Samuel Hickman

There are three Samuel Hickmans in that time span and in that area. Samuel Hickman b. est 1740 m. Margaret Milliken in abt 1763. She was baptised in 1743 in St. David's Parrish,Horry Co, SC the daughter of Moses Milliken. Source:Family Bible of Moses Milliken which is in Library of Congress. After the War Samuel returned to South-Eastern NC, possibly Brunswick.
The second Samuel Hickman is b. 1775 and could be Samuel and Margaret's son.
The third Samuel Hickman was born in 1848 s/o Anna Hickman who is found later living in the household of Samuel Hickman b. 1775 in Brunswick Co.
Confusing isn't. Maybe Carolyn can explain it better than I.

Margaret Hickman is in the will of Ann Wingate, 1763, Bk 2 pg 278 Bladen, Also the same will is posted in Craven, Horry, SC., 1773. So Margaret was md. by 1763. Ann Wingate was the wife of John Wingate of Brunswick, NC and Horry, SC and Bladen, NC. Just like the Margarets, we think there are several John's. Would like help to separate them. Does anyone know who the John is that is on the Little River of Brunswick by 1766? Jean Larson

Will of Edward Wingate Sr. of date 1758 recorded in Craven Co. SC lists heirs with roots in several southeastern NC counties: Bladen, Brunswick, and Columbus. In his will, Edward Wingate Sr. does not name his wife by name but from sundry other sources, she can be identified as Ann Blount. Son John Wingate is given "one shilling and no more." Son Edward Wingate Jr. married Sarah ______. Edward Wingate Jr.'s son Edward Wingate is also mentioned. Daughter Sarah Wingate Bell, the wife of James Bell (my line of descent is through their daughter Sarah Bell who married John Galloway). Also leaves grandsons Samuel Bell and James Bell land at Lockwood Folly. Daughter Mary Simmons (spelled Symmonds) wife of John Simmons. Daughter Ann Hickman, wife of John Hickman. Mentions land at Lockwood Folly to grandsons John Hickman and Edward Hickman.

Brunswick Count Deed Bk A Page 144 of date 1772, gives the children of Edward Wingate Jr: Arthur Council Wingate, Walter Wingate, William Wingate, Joseph Wingate, and daughter, Sarah Wingate. Wife is not mentioned.

John Simmons and wife, Mary Wingate Simmons were in the Lower Cape Fear area that would later become Brunswick County as early as 1733. On Moseley's map of that year, a Simmons Ferry is shown operating on the Shallotte River. By going to the Court Minutes of New Hanover County for that time period, we are able to identify the operators of that ferry as John and Mary Wingate Simmons. In the March 1737 notes, Mary Simmons petitioned the court to keep the ferry. Again in the September 1741 court minute notes, we learn that John Simmons was the ferry keeper.

Thanks again. My direct line is Thomas Sessions and Martha Wingate. She is supposed to be the dau of John Wingate and Hannah Sessions. I haven't found much on them yet. Naturally I get that one!! I think he lived in SC. This year I hope to turn my research in that direction. I don't think there are many more records for Brunswick or Columbus that I haven't done. Good hunting. Jean

Do you know of any WINGATEs that ended up in Florida? Especially in Nassau County or Duval County, FL. My g.grandmother, Catherine DIXON SELLERS, is buried in the Stones Family Cemetery that is now located in some people's yard in Jacksonville, FL. The only graves with headstones are all WINGATEs. I am trying to find the connection as to why she would have been buried with the WINGATEs.
