Seeking more information about the Reverend Ernest W. Tong family who lived in the Redland community in the 1880s-1920s. He was a Methodist minister and may have been pastor of one of two Methodist churches at Redland (probably called Oak Grove and Mt. Nebo) during this early period. The Tongs appear to have been related to the Webb, Worthington, and Hughes families, as well as later possibly the Jackson and Ridling families.

Also seeking more info on the following Tong child buried in 1902 at Shady Grove Cemetery at Redland:

HORACE W. TONG – born 1890, died 1902. Horace, who died at age 12, appears to be the son of Sarah S. Webb Worthington and Rev. Ernest W. Tong—-a Methodist minister at Redland in 1888-1897. Sarah died in 1923, and she is buried at nearby Liberty Cemetery. Rev. Ernest W. Tong had earlier been married to Sarah A. Hughes (born 1841 AL, died in Nov 1888), who helped organize Salem Methodist Church in 1880.

Others who may be related: John F. Tong married in 1897 to Camilla Jackson, with Rev. Ernest W. Tong performing the ceremony. Earl T. Ridling married Etta Tong about 1914 at Redland. E. D. Tong married C. V. Jackson in 1899 at Redland. In 1954 at Prescott, there was a State Trooper policeman, R. Henry Tong, which may also be from this particular Tong family line.

1900 Redland TWP Nevada Co has the only 2 Tongs listed in Nevada Co. They are Walter(?Horace Walter) b Jan (or Jun) 1890 and Etta Jul 1892 both in AR with father b MO. They are living with mother Sallie Worthington and her son James b Nov 1882 AR.

There is a Horace Tong in Little River Co as son of John F, Horace was b 1898.

As far as any info on Ernest W Tong, I do not find a single thing. I do find Elijah W Tong b 1839 MO who was in Miller Co AR 1880 with wife Rebecca, sons Wm H.,John, Jasper and Eliza(census states that). In the marriages for Nevada Co, there is one for EW Tong age 50 to Sarah Worthington 33 Feb 17 1889. That would make this EW the same age as Elijah.

Little River 1900 has John F and William H listed in Burke TWP, b MO. John F had a son b 1900 named Elijah Wood Tong. Also in John's household was Carrie Tong, sister in law age 21 who was married to E.D. Tong. John ended up marrying her in 1910 in LR Co.

Just in case you think Elijah and Ernest are the same, LDS has Elijah Tong as son of Henry David Tong and Elizabeth Woods b ca 1837-41 in Madison Co MO. His first marriage and mother of those 1880 children was Rebecca Downs who he married Mar 28 1858 in St Francis MO. In 1870 they were in Jackson Co AR. Mother Elizabeth was there with children Martha,Shelton,John, Nancy & James. Elijah and his family were next door with son George R as well as children already mentioned.

Also, Mar 27 1884 EW Tong age 45 married Martha E Cherry age 43 in Miller Co AR.

I'd like to make a correction in your analysis of Earl T. Ridling.
Earl did not marry Etta Tong. Marietta was Earl's mother, she married Robert Wiley Ridling 6 April 1912. Etta was born 11 June 1892, her son Earl Talmadge, who is buried at Shady Grove Church Cemetery, was born 26 Sept 1916.

Robert Ridling and Marietta Tong had 7 sons, Herman, Thurman, Earl, Paul, Eugene, Leon, Leroy,(twins) and 1 daughter, Murvel. Most of the boys went to school at Cale, a small settlement SE of Prescott, and I have some of their photos, and I have been told, that if you picked a fight with one of these boys..you better be prepared to fight them all!! Earl Talmadge Ridling only lived 1 year and 11 months as he died 8 Aug 1918, and if I am not mistaken, I believe he died of a blocked colon. His mother, Marietta, fell and broke her hip, and she had hardened of the arteries, and lived 87 years and 11 months.
I have only just started rasearching the Tongs, so I do not have any info to offer. replies may be initated at jridling@alltel.net

Very interested in anything you've uncovered about the Tongs as I am related as well. My great grandmother was a Tong and she married Dallas Putnam.
