I am trying to trace the France family from Dewbury, Yorkshire who had a Woollen Mill (James France & Co). My Gt Grandfather was Walter France born Dewsbury 1857 believe his father was Edwin b 1827 who married Harriett 1854. Any info would be much appreciated.

Dear Jon - looks like we have a common ancestor. Walter's son Rowland Ellis France was my Grandfather. Rowland was born in 1889, and died on the 17th April 1934. He and my grandmother (Mary Ida) lived in Ravenscar Yorkshire (she died on March 29th 1967).

Based on the 1881 Census for Thornhill, Walter (then age 24) lived with his parents Edwin (age 54) and Harriet (48) and his sister Mary E (26). There address was Savile Terrace, Thornhill. By the 1901 Census for Thornhill, Harriett (then 66) is listed as a widow, in the household of her son-in-law Joe Talbot (43) an iron-mongery bookeeper, and her daughter Mary E Talbot (45), their sons Arthur (10) and George E (8) Their address was Oakdene, Savile Town, Thornhill (on the outskirts of Dewsbury.

Based on what my grandmother told me Walter was Mayor of Dewsbury. He is listed as Mayor for 1915, 1916, 1917 and 1918.

In the 1901 census for thornhill Walter is listed as a Carpet Manufacturer of Worsted and Yarn Spinner (Employer). I am not sure that this is connected to James France and Company.

In Pigot's Directory for Dewsbury in 1829. A "Spring Mill" is listed as belonging to Smith and France (at Westgate End).

In Pigot's Directory for 1834 Smith and France are listed as Carpet and Rug Manufacturers in School Lane.

In Whites Directory for 1837 Jas France is listed as a carpet Manufacturer at School Close. There was also a Jno France, listed as a shopkeeper at Northgate, but no indication if he was related.

There are record for James France and Co Ltd, Woolen and Worsted Manufacturers, Dewsbury Records (1902-1971) Ref KC56 in the West Yorkshire Archive Sources, Kirklees, A2a Catalogues (www.a2a.org.uk). I have not seen these so cannot comment on the content.

I would be interested to know your connection with Walter, and any information you may have about the Frances of Dewsbury,

Regards Darrel

My grandfather was Claude France and he worked at the James France mill in Dewsbury for many years (I have a watch he was presented with for long service). He died in 1969, just before the company went bankrupt in 1971.

Walter was my Great Grandfather too. My father was John Walter France who ran James France & Co until his death in 1971. Walter's eldest son Harold (1882-1940) was my fathers father.
Edwin was the 3rd child of Hiram (born 1796) who was the son of James France (1771-1840) who first founded James France and Co, believed to be in 1790. Hiram was married to Elizabeth Aukland and Edwin to Harriet Heminway of Earlsheaton.
James was born in Halifax and the 1790 census listed him as a "carpet manufacturer late of Halifax". He was descended from a family whose name was changed from Stuart after the uprising of Bonnie Prince Charlie had been crushed at Culloden. Our family tale is that our ancestors fled to France after Culloden, returning with the new surname of "France" for safety rather than Stuart.
I inherited the family genealogy file after my mothers death. There is lots in it and it is a big job to sort through everything. I also have some files relating to James France & Co but I think these only deal with business matters relating to the demise of the business. Asda in Dewsbury now sits on the site of the old mill.
How are you related to Walter?
Regards
Sarah

Dear Sarah - Have just found your post. I had not heard the story of the Scottish linkage before! I had always supposed that the name change occured in the 1600s, when French workers were brought in to do the red tile roofs in Yorkshire.

Looks like our linkage is through our common great Grandfather (Walter). My Mother was Mabel France, daughter of Rowland Ellis France (1889-1934) and his wife Mary Ida (1891-1967) who lived at Ravenscar, where I spent many summer holidays. Rowland was the brother of your Grandfather Harold, so I guess your father and my mother were cousins.

Thanks for the information re the connection with the James France Mill as we did not have any solid record on this, ecept for an online photo of the company cricket club.

I moved to Canada in 1969, but there still seems to be masses of Frances in and around Ravenscar. My 4 brothers and one sister (Longs) still live in England. If you want any further info please contact me at darrel.long@sympatico.ca Cheers Darrel

Dear Helen - Really good to hear from you. I have offten wondered where Aunt Dawn was living in the US, especially after I moved to Canada in 1969. Aunt Dawn probably remembers me as a small boy, collecting rocks in Ravenscar, when we spent the summers with grandma France. I continue to do this, and have been teaching geology at Laurentian University, in Sudbury Ontario since 1981. My older brother (Mervyn) and his second wife (Sue) now live in Herstmonceux in Sussex UK. My younger brother (Patrick) lives near Hastings, and my sister Tania lives in Eastbourne. My Father (Ian) retired to Cornwall, and remarried in 1978. He and his wife (Anne)had two sons (Martyn and Kris - 38 and 40 yrs younger than me!). My dad died last year at the age of 89. I was married in 1972 to Anne (not the same one) and have two children. My son Tristan (b. 1976) teaches Biology at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo ON. He and his wife Natasha spent four years in Santa Barbara CA, where Tristan was doing a post Doc. They have a US-born son (Griffin) who is now 3.5 years old. My daughter Siobhan (b. 1978) now lives in Vancouver, where she lives with her husband Chris (a primary/elementary school teacher). Siobhan is working in Marketing/Communicaions for a non-profit Art Organization.

We would love to hear from your mother, please send me contact details to darrel.long@sympatico.ca so that I can contact her. It is great to here from a long-lost cousin, and would love to hear about your family too

Best Wishes Darrel

Hello

Reading this thread, and I am trying to find out how my family are connected as my relative Elizabeth FEARNLEY married a Charles France in 1847 in Dewsbury, and he was involved in a carpet company in the town.
