Do you have any McLaughlin or Laughlin surnames in your Skinner line? I have a Skinner believed to be from Woodruff Co., AR

My mother was Cynthia Skinner - her Dad was George Washington Skinner born in 1888 died in 1966 I am not sure who his father was or brothers. He married an Myrtle Allgood who passed away while giving birth to a third child - He then married her sister Edith Allgood (who is my grandmother) As far as I know my grandfather had lived in Arkansas for at least 60 years. I do have some great uncles there as well - I really should find out who they all are.

I do not know much of AR history, to be sure I looked up when it became a state - in 1836. What little I know of AR around that time, most SKINNER folk were still back in Lunenberg VA and some in NC growing tobacco and cotton. From what I can tell, a greater migration followed the civil war. Go looking at some 1850 - 1860 AR censuses to find your Skinners and who they lived near. My guess, their generations would have come through AL on their way south from the NC and VA.

I have found some more information on the Skinner side of my family.... George W Skinner's father was Calvin Skinner and his mother was Rebecca (Becky) The census indicates they were both lived in Ohio (some of the kids were born there) but were born in Virginnia. They are both buried in the Pumpkin Bend cementary as are a few of their children. If anyone has additional information please let me know.

Well, this may help. What appears to be your George W who married sisters Edith and Myrtle ALLGOOD was a II, son of George Washington SKINNER. You'll find 4 trees at Two give a birth year as 1882 not 1888. No Calvin SKINNER shown. Nothing about OH or VA.

At any rate there are 4 other researchers to crosscheck notes with; 3 if one of those is yours.

Using info from your post and the one previous, I found no matches that made sense on censuses nor records at, not even on the SSDI social security death index.

The Calvin Skinner found at the various sources born 1830 VA died 1907 WV.

The only census find I can be fairly sure of was:

1920 > Arkansas > WOODRUFF > MCCRORY; DE VIEW
Series: T625 Roll: 85 Page: 178
SKINNER George W 37 AR VA IN farmer
Myrtle 16 AR AR AR
Roxia 9, Birthia 7, Calvin 6, Thia?, all AR AR AR

I suggest you start over with George's death certificate and the Social Security death info and work back, unless the contacts from help.

Thank you for your interest as well as your time spent lookin up the information posted. Regarding my previous postings: I have tried to add any new information as I gather it to these sites. I found an 1880 Woodruff County, Caney Township, census with the following:
Calvin Skinner age 33 - brn OH - father bp VA -mothers bp VA
Becky Skinner age 32- brn OH - father bp VA -mothers bp OH
Dan Skinner age 16 - born VA
Henry Skinner age 6 - born IN
Ada Skinner age 4 months AR

A later Census taken the 9th of June 1900 in the Caney Township has the following:

Skinner, Calvin Head of born in Virginnia Jan 1842
His Father/Mother born in VA as well

Rebecca Wife born in Indianna
Her Father born in Virginnia Mother in Ohio

Henry Son born in Virginnia 1874
John Son born in Arkansas 1891
George Son born in Arkansas 1882 (my grand-father)
Ada Dau born in Arkansas 1866
Lidia(?)Dau born in Arkansas 1889
Bertha Dau born in Arkansas 1890
Joe Son born in Arkansas 1893

I had found some Skinners listed in a cemetary around Pumpkin Bend and some of the names listed I recognized as Great Uncles - Calvin was listed there and was the oldest - that is when I began my search on him: The dates are not corresponding with the census but the rest doses

This cemetery is located in the Pumpkin Bend Village. About 7/8 miles East of McCrory. off 64 Hwy take 269 North about 3 1/2 miles.
